Sorry if this is a daft question but never started a bike on stands before, wondering if this'll be OK ?, wheels are getting powdercoated, while that's getting done (a week or so), wouldn't mind doing an oil and filter change but would like to run the engine and heat it up to drain the oil.

Not how you have it now. Even with the bike in neutral there will be some viscous drag from the oil/clutch causing the front Sprocket to turn. That chain will spin with it!

Just be wary of the clutch dragging which is quite common. You often see the rear wheel turn slightly when on a stand running out of gear.

In your case it could pinch the chain somewhere in the front sprocket / frame area. Would probably be ok but worth considering.

The oil will have drained to the sump as much as it ever will.
It will drain out of the sump perfectly well cold, it will just take longer.
You have plenty of time!
Just leave it draining overnight.

Cheers guys, will probably just change the oil cold, did think about the clutch drag and the chain turning but will wait till i get the wheels back to fire it up.

You must have some other oil that is the wrong weight just sat there? Judt pour it in/keep the drain plug open? Itll collect/run through cleaner.

The idea of flushing is fine, but don't flush it with the completely wrong oil. Flush it with the same type of stuff you're going to leave in it, because it'll leave residue etc in there.

Agreed. The only reason to warm up an engine is so the oil is thinner and runs out more quickly. That matters in a commercial setting where time is money. It doesn’t matter in the slightest when you have all day - and it’s less prone to splashing everywhere if it’s a bit thicker, and you don’t risk scorching your fingers on hot oil.
