Just watched a review where Jeremy Clarkson and his neighbour Harry Metcalfe conclude that the Range Rover L322 from the mid 2000’s is the best car ever made.
It has a bit of class, old enough to be affordable, modern enough to use every day.

What would you consider the equivalent for bikes?

You may as well start then . . .

OK. Saw a young lad on a late 90’s VFR750 recently and thought there’s a decent bike. So perhaps that or the early 2000’s VFR800?

Gentlemen don't ride bikes.

But if you mean middle-aged, small 'c' conservative, moderately well-off normal men, I'd say the BMW GS would be the most likely candidate.

Range Rover and "thinking" don't really come into it - unless "thinking" equates to "how much is this going to cost me now"/"will I make it home without the AA?"

I feel you need to clarify if you're talking about unreliable, overpriced heaps of one trick pony, or something someone sensible would buy?

More than one probably a stable of 3-4 bikes.

A relatively rapid do most of it: think Multistrada or GS

something for the weekend: retro like a Bonnie or a z900

Dirty fun: cheap light off road : crf 250 or similar

Haha! Maybe ignore the Range Rover bit, it’s kind of irrelevent here. Seeing two of our most famous motoring journalists agree what they consider to be the best car made, got me wondering what peoples opinion was in respect of bikes.

I suppose I am asking what you think is the best bike of the last 30 years or so. One that is modern enough to use every day, old enough to be affordable, and is special enough to be interesting.

VFR 750 fits the bill I think, though perhaps getting a bit long in the tooth. interested to hear others opinions.

No 'gentleman' would be seen with a plastic tank, the shame.

This. Has to be the 750F for me. Best motorcycle ever made, and will ever be made, all things considered.

EDIT: other suggestions would be the CBE600F (steel framed) or CBR1100XX.

Hmm yes. Upon your thoughts I was pondering that plastic tank business, thought of the 1198SP but it's just not an R.

Pretty much any of the VFRs in that case then.

Despite it's faults I absolutely loved my 1200F. I don't think anything else has or will ever come close in terms of fit and finish. I think most of it's weight was due to how amazingly thick it's paint finish was!

Got to be the Honda Blackbird surely?

Cheap(ish) now, effortlessly fast, smooth, comfortable, understated looks and fits in at a chip shop in Skegness or the seafront at Monaco.

Fast, comfortable, can tour on it. Easy to maintain, cheap enough, pretty good on fuel.
Possibly not that good off road!

It still looks good, has a V configuration engine, is comfortable and understated.

Any bike that meets all your actual riding needs, that you can afford, that you like the look of, that is worth the effort keeping and maintaining, plus doesn't doesn't have an antisocial exhaust.

Kind of like what your partner should be like exhaust included.
