Moulded Earplugs

Hey all,

Me again!

It was my birthday last week and my gorgeous Fiancé purchased me a gift voucher for Ultimate Ear so I can get myself some moulded ear plugs.

Currently, I have a modular helmet and I use the Alpine Motosafe earplugs and I find that they’re either not in far enough and it’s still so loud, or they’re in too far and I can’t hear anyone or anything through my Cardo.

Went to make my purchase of a set of £89 earplugs that I can hear my Cardo through Ultimate Ear (based on their recommendation from them direct), only to find there’s an additional £30-£40 fee on top for the actual moulding which they don’t actually tell you about.

Can anyone recommend anywhere reputable that doesn’t cost a fortune? Bonus points for somewhere based in the North East where I can get them done in person!

They do free moulding on their trade stand, maybe join all of their social stuffs to see where they're going to next or phone them and ask?

I bought some in the last few weeks and they arranged the appointment with a local audiologist for me and I just paid them directly. I’d call them and see if this is an option, if not then I believe you can go to any audiologist that does ear impressions and get them sent across to UE.

That said, I’m currently looking to have mine adjusted as they aren’t providing a seal making them considerably noiser that the disposable foam plugs that I’ve been using up until now.

Or wait until the MCL in November and get them from the stand. I got some last year and there was no moulding fee. Gets you another reason to go to the show.

Typically, I've been saying for the last two years at the MCN I wanted to get them done but never did and this year we're heading out to Arizona in November so won't be at the show this time round.

Seriously, just pay to have the impressions made it's worth the cost, make sure you go for filtered ear plugs not just the plain ones if you are using it with a Cardo. I've been using moulded plugs since 2005 and have no regrets at all they are worth every penny they cost to prtect your hearing.

Alternatively, the moulded plugs I got made are the worst thing I've ever spent money on. I got them custom moulded at a show (can't remember the brand but they sponsored Tommy Bridewell in his Oxford days) and wore them for less than 10 miles before going back to foamys.

Did you go for soft silicon or the hard plastic acrylic type?

I had the same issue with mine from Ultimate Ear, one wouldn't reliably seal. They arranged a 2 min video call to check I was putting them in properly (I was) returned them to be adjusted & they had them back to me within 10 days or so & they've been perfect since. Can't fault their service.

Is there an option to have the Cardo connected to the earphones so I can hear music and Cardo conversations clearer, rather than use the helmet speakers?

If you want an alternative then get the Ultimate Ear plugs with speakers in, a bit more money, but you can plug them directly into your Cardo and have the best of both worlds. An absolute game changer for me.

Get those with the short connection and it will plug straight into the Cardo output.

I’m in the same boat. Definitely not impressed by the ones I had done.

There seems very little difference between having them in or not. So much so that 9 times out of 10 I just don’t bother.

interesting to see so many mixed reviews for the ultimate Ear moulded earphones.

I have been using mine for about 10 years and I've always found them excellent. I use the ones with the built-in speaker and the short wire with a jack plug that goes directly into my Senna communications unit on my helmet.

I had to have mine repaired once due to one of the speakers failing but I'm sure it was wear and tear with my rough use of taking them in and out rather than any quality issue. their customer service for organising the repair was first class.

I’ve recently got a set of the ultimate ear soundears which come with a 3.5mm jack that plug into my cardo (get the short lead) and they are amazing. Fit perfectly and really quiet everything down. I use the cardo on volume one and it is plenty loud enough. I use that with my adventure helmet with peak and it’s night and day difference.

I was so impressed i also then got a set of the 29snr filtered ear plugs for my quieter helmet. These are also decent and allow me to hear intercom and music through headphones helmet speakers, although speakers are on volume 7/10.

I found the website to be fairly clear that you’d need to pay for an audiologist appt. mine was £30 and from ordering to recieving the soundears was about 3.5 weeks and the filtered was 2.5weeks.

Just waiting for my earplugs to be finished. Had the impressions done a few weeks ago, cost £35. I have a set I have been wearing for about 8 years, but having read that you should get new moulds after that time as your ears keep growing, I decided to order a new pair with new impressions.

I have the filtered ones and have no issues hearing my cardo or music.

yes just buy the ear plugs with the built-in headphones and wire jack plug connection.
