After reading the recent scooter thread I’m back on two wheels with another Xmax.

I’m looking at some security from it and wondering if people have any advice with the more modern stuff as I imagine and hope it’s moved on in the past 10 years!

I’ve still got some beefy almax chains that I’m happy with but I’m interest to hear about alarmed disc locks and trackers.

My old xena alarmed disc lock got thrown in the bin as it was forever going off, a quick internet search shows the ABUS Granit Detecto 8077 2.0 as a interesting option, anyone have any experience or with a similar lock?

As for trackers, the Monimoto 9 tracker again looks like it’s half sensible for the money? Any experience or experience of alternatives?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Disclocks - I have an Oxford XA14. Seems alright, compact enough to sling in the glovebox. Easy to charge, usbc cable, had it 3 months, charged it once. Use it every single day and night as its so quick to put on. Its not that sensitive, it only goes off if you're messing with it, and its pretty grim/loud in your face. Forged stainless steel body and if you shop about can be had pretty inexpensively.

Some have replaceable batteries that need changing every month and that will become a pain in the arse and expensive.

Weakest part of most disclocks is the disk but theyre only really combating opportunists on other scoots/ebikes.

Chains are heavy and cumbersome. The future is D-locks. 2, grinder resistant Dlocks is about the peak. (Litelok, hiplok, Oxford Grinder)

One through the wheel/brake disk, and the second to link it to some street furniture or anchor.

My preferred parking spot in my town centre has a low level steel hoop and my litelok Dlock perfectly fits through my front wheel/disk and the hoop in one fell swoop.

Litelok do key-matching too on the X1 series which is nice so you're not carrying around a pocketfull of keys.

As always, the best form of security is the one you use every time (and easiest).

I’ve an Apple AirTag stuck under the seat. I’ve no idea if I’d want a stolen bike back, but for £25 I do get the option if trying to find it if they do the “park it in the local estate to see if it has a tracker on” thing,

Keeping it covered or out of sight is the best security.

I too have an Oxford AX alarmed disk lock, I doubt the disk lock bit is that amazing but it does make a lot of noise and will at least slow them down while attracting attention. Small enough to carry around easily. Reasonably priced as well.

The angle grinder resistant locks are expensive but good. They're quite heavy to carry. If you have plenty of underseat space on your scooter then no reason not to have one with you. The chain becomes the weakest point unless you can lock directly to something.

If someone wants it they'll take it, you can only slow them down and make it as uncomfortable as possible for them.

Hiplok Dx1000 front, with a smaller chain that can be secured to any ground rings or anything else. Rear disc lock, mine is an abus, through the rear disc. If away, I take a cover as well. The chain will be the only thing that will stop someone picking it up and chucking the scoot in a van. But my chain is only 10mm so more of a deterrent that to stop the determined thieves.

The in the back of a van thing is really only for organised gangs, mate had his BMW GS lifted out of a car park outside a hotel in Southampton on a lunch time.

Hiplok or similar will deter the opportunist drag away thieves.

My grandson just recently had his 125 nicked. He had the Monimoto 9, so we could track it and recover it. Disc lock had been levered off.

Thanks for the replies, I’m well aware what we are up against, I’ve had two bikes stolen and a MTB stolen now, all of which had security.
I’m after an audible disc lock just to get my attention if the bikes interfered with when parked during the day.
The tracker is for the chance to get it back if it does get targeted.

Did you actually get it back?

I have a Monimoto I like it. Biggest problem of course is they might find it and rip it off. Replace batteries once a year.

Yes. They dropped it once they saw headlights following them up a path. They failed to start their escape vehicle and abandoned that too.
