As I'm not a great fan of Winter riding, I fancied one last decent trip out before it all gets a bit gloomy.

So three of us heading out tonight from Portsmouth to Cherbourg with a hopefully pleasant 230 miles coastal run to Perros-Guirec in Brittany tomorrow. We've rented a house to use as a base for some exploring and have tried a bit of AI to give us some suggestions for days out which look interesting.

Back next Wednesday which should be long enough to do what we have in mind and off-season so all the prices are pretty sensible.

Not done Brittany before as always headed South so quite looking forward to this as a gentle end of season run out.

The missus and I have similarly always headed south but had two nice holidays in Brittany in the past two years and planning another for next year, possibly. Galettes, cidre and relaxing pottering is the way, for us anyway.

Let us know how it goes. Always on the lookout for weekend away ideas from the South coast.
I think we’re going to do a few days over to Bruges and surrounding area before it gets all dark and gloomy.

We made it back to Portsmouth this morning without incident.

Run down the coast from Cherbourg last Friday was not as nice as hoped due to the monsoon conditions but we discovered that the canopied car wash bays the French love do have other uses!

The weather cleared as we got past St Malo and we had a great onward run in the sunshine to our digs in Perros-Guirec which turned out to be a very swanky little town with a smart marina, lots of boats and more importantly, plenty of restaurants!

And a nice view over the lake at the front

We were determined to do 'all points of the compass' in our four full days in Brittany and we pretty much managed it. The roads across Brittany are terrific, traffic free and a real mix of scenery. Inevitably, you always get to the Coast somewhere and it was all pretty dramatic.

Overall, it worked out as a good option rather than heading South as usual. Sure it's not all knee-down twisties but sometimes it's good just to mooch about and sunshine plus sparse traffic always help! We did c200 miles each day and it never felt a slog. We hit really heavy weather coming back up to the Caen ferry last night which made the last 50 miles pretty unpleasant but it is October. Far worse was the insane traffic on the M27 at 7am this morning which had me yearning to go back!

As an aside, the super efficient GS1300's seemed to suffer with electrical niggles whilst my potentially temperamental Italian never missed a beat. Who knew!
