Datatool Gear indicator
Discussion
I find them very handy. I went for the Acumen permanently wired ones - you get a choice of colours and the blue fits with my bike lighting better. I have them on my RSVR and my R1.
I have also fitted a Datatool one to a 2001 Ninja - dead easy. If you're buying the loom then they're even easier to fit.
Very handy for reminding you to change up on the motorway. They don't, however, tell you which gear you're in until you let the clutch out.
They work by comparing engine revs against speedo pulses.

Its the soldering, and need for a padock stand that puts me off.

As for the padock stand, just use an open piece of road instead.

I'd like a light that tells me if I'm in first so I don't slam it into first thinking it was second with 50 feet to go to a roundabout which wags the back and puts the wind up me. I'm always trying to change in to seventh on the motorway too. Maybe I should get one
Surely by that point its too late, as youre already in first?
hehe I know what you mean though, the times you describe are the only times I would really benefit from one, so I haven't bothered - on the open road, it matters not what gear you're in, just aim to be at peak revs.

had 1 on my R1 but only because it came with it, i cant imagine it been a 5 minute job to fit.[/quote]I put one on my 2004 R1. If I had ignored Acumen's instructions on which speedo wire to use it would have taken me about an hour. Instead it took an afternoon.

thats not too bad, i fancied a quickshifter on my R1 but as its gone now im going to wait and put 1 on my new Fireblade when i get it.
996r - very nice
I don't think the earlier 380's (1972ish) had the gear indicator but they started fitting them in the mid 70s, I had a brief fling with a silver 1976 model that had one but no, no 7 speed gearbox
but I've never had (or seen) another bike since with a gear indicator, just seems to me to be something that I would have thought bike manufacturers would offer....
