I can't believe it, I was talking to my mum and I dropped into the conversation that I'd been looking at some bikes for next year. She looked shocked and said that there was no way I was getting a bike .

Basically, its apparently "certain death" and I'll "act like a dick, crash and kill yourself". What the hell can I do?

Why the hell do parents think they are right all the time, and know everything? She wasn't happy with my getting this bike (well, ok, moped/scooter thing) but I figured once she got used to me riding bikes she'd be fine about it. I've been riding mountain bikes and stuff for years and years and even had 4 bikes till recently (road bike, mountain bike, BMX, micro bike ), and always knew that I wanted a big bike, for that engine sound and the awesome acceleration . But thats all gone out of the window.

Do you reckon I can persuade her round? She seems pretty definate about me not getting a bike and just getting a car. Bollocks.

Get a car instead, you're not missing much with bikes.

Had exactly the same "conversation" with my mum 37 years ago, however, whilst you may be annoyed and mad with her it's only because she cares about you, always remember that....

Now, over 20 motorbikes later I am still around although a couple of my friends are not, (killed in bike crashes, one when he was sixteen years old).

Maybe she will relent over the next few months......

If you live under her roof you may have to respect her wishes and bide your time a little. It's not because she hates you, it's because she loves you Yuk, I just used the L word! and doesn't want to see you get hurt. Perhaps a compromise agreement where you keep the bike you have and get a car as well so you can build your skills up until you're under your own roof.

It's ages since I passed my test, but is there anything to stop you passing your test on a school bike in readiness?

Oh, and get your car licence whatever. If you get smashed up on a bike, you'll be glad you can drive while you're recovering. Oh

Well if mummy says you cannot have a bike, and you are not man enough to either save up for one yourself, or convince them otherwise, then you deserve to have to drive a corsa, or little 106.... Either way they'll be quicker than a scooter!

My mum just accepted it, i have been riding bikes off road for 20+ years and she never had a problem with that but when i told her i was getting the CBR she was not impressed, she does not like it or want to talk about but she does not really have any choice. I have asked her if she wants to have a go and you can imagine the answer....

On the other hand the mother-in-law has been on the back a couple of time, and quite likes it considering she has never been on a bike before.

Tell her that a biker bike has more precense on the road than a scooter, therefore much stable and car drivers can see you better. Who care if it is true just do it

My mum was pretty cool about it.

"I'm bored with cars. I'm going to do my bike test and get something quick."
"That's nice, dear."

Get yourself onto a trackday bike, tell your Mum that its safer and all the medic people / marshalls / one way traffic and anything else you can think of to convince her that you just gotta do this.

When you've proved yourself on trackdays go for your race licence and forget road bikes. Once your on track 95% of racers don't bother with road stuff at all.

We could provide a whole album of track shots between us all that you could have blown up for your bedroom wall. Who knows, may get the missus to do some 'girl draped across machinery shots' just like my old picture of Linda Lusardi across a Testarossa, hhhmmm, Linda.

I am going to sound really old here.... and I promise you I am not that old!

When I was 16 I wanted a motorbike and my Mum said no way, I moved out at 17 (with a full licence and a car I bought), always had cars and with sensible things like buying house, and un-sensible things (but great fun!) like lads holidays pushed bike to the back of my mind whilst I got on with life.

Then got to 28 and decided to do bike test - having never ridden a bike (bar messing about in fields on mates 50's and 125's).

Passed test July 2004, and 20,000 miles later, you could say that the bike bug has well and truly bitten..... I can't get enough of it.

I have however been known to make the comment that if I had got into this biking when I was younger I am not sure I would have been sensible enough to have not had my share of incidents - however that is just me - not preaching to you as I don't know you!

Interstingly, even now - two months shy of 30 - if I go to see my Mum in the car she waves me away from the house. If I am on the bike she doesn't even leave the room!!

Seriously though, if I'd got a bike at 18 I would probably be dead by now too. If you want an exciting ride why not get a girlfriend instead?

(Although these usually work out to be far more expensive)

Tell her that you'll go to bed on time every night and keep your room tidy if she lets you.
