Suitable Winter project ?

I've been thinking of sorting the suspension on the SV out in the past, but never reached a firm decision on it. I still enjoy the bike, but after 25k the suspension is starting to feel a bit tired. Recently found a whole bunch of useful info on fork conversions for the SV and it's set me thinking about having a go at it myself. On the possibles list are GSXR and R1 front ends, as with a suitable bearing in the yokes these forks will bolt straight on to the SV apparently. I'm favouring the R1 conversion because it seems likely there will be less change in suspension geometry from this conversion. I'd need to get the forks valved and sprung to suit me and most likely replace the rear spring and damper too (have been eyeing up a Nitron for the job). The thing is, is this something I can realistically manage? Also, can you still get insurance cover if you do such a conversion? Finally, has anyone done something like this in the past and do you have any advice?

That's more of a weekend project than a winter project

Perhaps a bad choice of words, I meant a project to do this winter rather than one that'd take the whole winter. I'd hope to do it during a weekend and ride the bike the following week - not a big fan of the train. May take a little while to get all the bits together but that's about it I'm hoping.

Forks are a piece of cake mate - remove the wheel, mudguard and undo a few pinch bolts and bobs yer uncle!

I'm not just planning on dropping the tubes out here. I'm aiming to unbolt one entire front end and replace it with another. Not quite a front wheel and a mudguard job but it shouldn't be that difficult.
