I wanted to buy some effective allweather gear with the intention of biking through most of the winter. Hein Gerricke had some good looking goretex all weather stuff for about £500 for the set. Is it worth it?. Reason I ask is at that price youre almost into Rukka territory so it would have to be pretty good to justify it!

I bought a hg textile gortex jacket recently. I can't find the name of the jacket from their range and think I got it as an end of line cheapy thing. Anyway, I use it on my daily commute, rode to manchester and back (from newbury) and rode to lancaster and back (6 hours there, 4 hours back) all in pouring rain and it hasn't leaked a single drop.

Regards,

Mark

I have not got the all weather gear, i bought 2 piece leathers and really rate them. UI think that you can't go far wrong with clothing from Hein Gericke.

Find HG stuff very good so far and their staff very helpful.

I've got the stuff that won the recent RiDE survey (I bought it before the test as I don't trust everything that mag promotes in his surveys!) and I've used it in torrential downpours and it has not leaked once.

Yep I use their stuff too for commuting daily for almost the last 6 years. Really rate it for quality and cheap cost.

My current gore-tex jacket is coming up to 2 years old an is still in perfect condition was £200 only when new!
The HG jacket I had before from their cheaper range lasted 4 years pretty much daily use and two non-fault low speed offs before starting to leak water round the waist seam.
I'm still on the original trousers (which came with the orginal jacket) and they will be 6 years old early next year. They are looking rather tatty but are still 100% waterproof. Will be getting new ones soon though.

Sure Rukka stuff is good but not double the price good!

I have an HG Cruise - very good all weather jacket. I previously had a non-goretex HG jacket which leaked and they replaced it with no quibbles so very impressed with the customer service. If you're going to do a lot of miles don't scrimp...

Me too!

Edited to say that Gore requires manufacturers to provide a 5-year guarantee on products using Gore Tex. So HG Gore Tex gear should last well "or your money back". Sympatex is possibly better than normal Gore Tex, but not as good as Gore Tex XCR. Like other manufacturers, HG is starting to make some products with Gore Tex XCR.

Rukka appear to charge an unnecessarily high premium. For example, I would pay a premiun for Gore Tex XCR Armacor. Because the XCR membrane is less sweaty than normal Gore Tex, so better on hot or humid days, and Armacor is one of the toughest non-leather materials. However, that combination is hardly worth £900-1000 per garment! For that money, I could probably afford both the flight to Sweden and a HI-ART Safety Jacket from www.jofama.se/motorcycle_wear/ ! Equally, Rukka's upper end garments use Outlast inside, but this only really helps when worn in direct contact with the skin (i.e. as a base layer).

Moreover, Rukka's mid-range garments (and below) don't use materials that are any better than people like HG. Some Rukka garments use Cordura 500, which isn't the toughest Cordura, whereas people like BMW often use tougher Cordura 700 for products at the same price point. If you're going to buy top quality kit, I'd check out some BMW clothing first.

also a thumbs up for HG kit. I bought the 2 piece Celtic leathers and gloves. The kit saved my skin and prevented me from loosing my right leg. top marks from me.

If your going for the all weather gear, make sure it has removable thermal liners and all the extra winter protection add ons. Mine are like this and it makes hot weather riding in London a lot cooler when you can take all the thermal linings out!

Good point about removable liners.

OUCH! What happened?

At a similar price, I also rate Scott Leathers' textile gear as good or better than HG. (See www.scottleathers.co.uk/ ) Scott Leathers' textile Dyno jackets were available half price at the NEC. I imagine there will be good deals at the forthcoming London motorcycle show, etc, too.

As I mentioned on a thread last year, Scott Leathers can custom make a textile jacket with a "white liner" that's claimed to be even more abrasion resistant than leather. BKS were selling a similarly protective textile jacket at the NEC this year. And Jofama ( www.jofama.se/ ) have one on the market too, with some UK distribution now. Good to see textile clothing improving like this.

Origional Question - Is HG kit good.

So far its the best i have worn.

I ride every day on the commute, have been touring in it and fallen asleep a few times whilst waiting around.

I havent found any leaks on my HG jacket or trousers. Its a really good bit of kit for the money. If your fickle, buy the Rukka kit or BMW for the name.

I wouldnt bother buying other dtuff at the mometn as its a good fit, well priced and its not brocken yet.

I had a REV IT all weather item which is CR@P.
