Hi folks. Quick question for you more experienced bikers...

I now know that this is a common problem for bikes, having discovered my tamper proof holder had been well and truly tampered with. Trouble is, it is now illegal for me to ride to work without tax - and in central london the chances of getting a ticket are high.

The process for getting a replacement requires you to go to an actual DVLA office or post the application with your £7.00 fee (charming after being the victim of the crime). I am too busy in the week to make a trip to Harrow just for this hence will have to be posted which I imagine will take some time.

My question is - do traffic wardens target bikes in the same way as cars (as bike disks are often dirty, low down and difficult to read). Just wondering how worried I should be about getting an £80 fine, leaving a bike parked without tax, until I can get a replacement. there is no grace period which I find quite amazing.

Cheers

happened to me earlier in the year.... I rode into the city with no Tax displayed for about 3 months, before getting around to getting another one.

Sent off to DVLA, and got tax disc back within three days. May take a bit longer though over Christmas.

After having 3x tax disks stolen in the city, Now I dont bother at all.
The Bike is Taxed, and the disk is either laminated in my wallet, or in the house.
Ive been stopped a few times and when challenged, have found plod had a sympathetic ear. Just explain that youve had a few nicked. They can check with the DVLA to see if you have one or not.

I keep mine in my wallet, much safer and it doesn't get wet or dirty, I park on the road in London every day and haven't had a problem. I don't think parking attendants can get you on TAX offences anyway as they are mainly contractors for parking offences only. AND with the new computer system at DVLA they get you other ways for not having any tax at all.

Wouldn't worry, send it it off and carry on as normal.
