nurburgring on a bike
Discussion
Have you done the Nurburgring before? If not I would strongly recommend doing your first couple of sessions on non-weekend days. Weekends are full of the local “lads” who know the Ring very well and will be coming past you at unbelievable speeds in all types of vehicles. They won’t give you much space and they’ll take the line they want regardless of what you want to do.
If you can, make your first couple of visits happen on weekdays. The Ring is a lot quieter and normally there is a “better class of hooligan”. Either way, enjoy and ride safe.

Love it on 4 wheels, but on 2 wheels doesnt appeal at all on a public day, bike only day then yeh Id love to ride it.

I'm trailering the caterham over there that w/e. Iggy, who are you doing spa with? RMA, goldtrack?
Only done about 80 laps on a bike (400 odd in a car), but won't ride it on a bike now, as personally, I think the risks are too high. After seeing how aggressive some of the car drivers re, unles you are both quick on a bike (i.e. can hold your on in the fast group on a trackday, or race) and know the lines, you will hold up the car drivers, who will show you their front bumpers on every corner. Car and bike lines (when 'pressing on') are also quite different. This means that even when there is a quick rider in front of you, passing them safely is hard.
Also, a lot of car drivers have never ridden a bike, so aren't aware of the fact that you are looking round the bend once you're at the turn-in point, rather than watching out for them trying to out brake you up to the apex!
Remember kids, armco is hard and hurts a lot. Always wear a back protector as a minimum.
If you want someone to show you the way round, try either Bren @ sliders guesthouse (if you can stay with him) or Simon Byrne of Byrne-up (organiser of ring trips, etc). Bob Iveson (also byrne up has prob done over 3000 laps on his gixxer thou and does not hang around.
Try and get a few car pax laps to take some of the surprises out othe circuit before venturing out on your own. You will be les of a liability to yourself this way.

edited to add- 'ring dates not relesed yet, but im planning on being there end May anyway, as got Spa end May so will be prob 'ringing before & after also.
No probs benny, obviously nowt can do till dates are released, but the pain is the wk end before- 27/28 & 29 is a UK bank holiday so will be pack full of brits hurling themselves in the armco, & the wk end after june 3/4 is rock at the 'ring, which means thousands of mullet haired germans will be about the place & ring will either be closed- or packed.
The wk days of that week should be good tho.
Oh and I will be going carefull before Spa, to try & insure I don't 'do a fergus' which is having Spa booked but blowing up the car at the 'ring beforehand!
which is indeed a bummer when you've got a couple of hundred quid trackday you cant then attend & a bunch of yr mates are . After Spa tho- if ive not pranged it or broken it I'll be going a bit harder

While I agree with you about bike only days, I fail to see how a bike only day would have made any difference to the bloke in the video?

I am going for the May bank Holiday, my 30th birthday! We are taking an R6, a Firestorm a Carrera 4 and a 500hp Golf tempremental turbocharged heap. If your interested, thinking of hiring a van, putting the bikes in the back and the golf on a trailer.
Room in the van if you need it!
How the bloody hell did you get insurance on a 500hp Golf? and for europe too!

Im guessing it would have made no difference to him coming off, but atleast some tit in a BMW wouldnt come round the bend and run the guy over as he's lying in the middle of the road!!!
I've only done one lap of the ring in a bike but quite a few in a car. I felt front slip quite early on in the lap and it shook my confidence. For whatever reason it was slippery, maybe just on that corner but I didn't have the confidence to try my luck on any others. I just pottered round like a tourist after that, apart from the obligatory 170mph blast down the long straight!
The trouble with the ring for me is I like to build up my speed progressively over a series of laps on a bike. That way I can feel out the grip and the line and the braking points on each corner etc before starting to push myself. You just don't get the chance to do this at the ring as a lap can easily take 10 minutes until you know what you're doing. And until that point you simply can't remember the circuit as there are so many turns compared with a UK trackday which you can learn roughly in a day. But as a thing to do, or have done, particularly if you're a very good rider or racing fanatic it's great. Me I'll stick to cars there. But if you can make it part of a trip to europe that includes other track days fine. Otherwise you'll have a better time and be riding much, much quicker round a UK track. My greatest biking memories are from the GP tracks at Silverstone and Brands Hatch.

I would advise doing a course if you want to go on a bike.
