Any R1 owners around??
Discussion
As a follow up to the post below i've just been for a toodle on his R1,better brakes than my ZX,better box than the ZX and sounds fantastic! It felt identical to the brand new GSXR600k3 i had, engine note just changes when the revs get up and you get a big induction roar:-)Anyway,he keeps bumping up the money so he must want my bike a lot,and i'm starting to quite like his bike, anyway,to the point. When i was out on his bike the second time the oil light came on!
I immediately stopped bike, started it again and the light went off, then it came on again. When i got off the bike he said this had happened for a while?I asked is the oil level ok and as it was on its side stand leaning over i looked at the window,it was totally covered when i was expecting being leant over the level should go way down the window, what level should it show on the oil window of an R1 when upright?Incidentally he's bumped up the money now to £900 plus his bike.
P.S He's just phoned me and said he dropped into his local dealer and they put a little oil in it and its ok now??

Yams like a drink of oil , the light tells you of low oil not pressure normally comes on when you are saving tread on the front tyre with low oil level, but if he's never noticed it and ragged it about with minimal oil , i would steer clear , stick with the kwack ...
or swap it for my mint thunderace and 3 wagon wheels

Hi there
I have a 2001 R1 and I have never had the oil light come on. Even when saving tredd on the front tyre!! Im not with my bike now but from memory the oil level is lower when its on the side stand.
If he keeps bumping the price up, he may have a hidden agenda!BEWARE!! (low oil pressure for instance!)
If you have any doubts steer clear. There are plenty of R1s out there. You wont have any problems chopping a ZX12 for an excellent one.
Good luck
John

That was the thing that puzzled me,when i brought his bike back after the run first thing i asked him is there plenty oil in it,i then looked at the window and it was fully covered on the sidestand? The oil light is seemingly an 'oil level' warning not pressure.I checked this morning on the phone to the place the guy dropped into when he went home last night, they said they just put quarter of a litre in it and that was it,no more light problem.I agree about the money going up all the time, strange, its maybe a hidden agenda but i genuinely do think he really wants the bike as he had one before.I just felt like a change for something a bit sportier looking, this is doing my nut in!You just don't know whether to trust people in this world

I bought a new R1 in '01, and never had a problem with oil light/levels etc.
My gut instinct here is stick with your ZX12R, which i think is a fantastic looking bike. Ok maybe not as sporty due to size & weight..but it would be my choice.
Any time there is doubt...walk away!! There are hundreds of potential R1 px's out there.
