I've got my theory test on Wednesday and having already done by car theory and everything should I be expecting it to be alot different? Apart from the obvious differences like questions on bike stuff.

Any help would be much appriciated!!!

It depends, how long ago did you do your Car theory test?

Theres an extra bit these days (for cars and bikes) called Hazard perception test.

This has tripped up a few people so try to practice it.

Otherwise, pretty much the same, only about 3 of my Bike theory test questions were specific to bikes.

Did mine today. Pleased to say I passed!! Key thing is swot up on theory bits, best book is "Learn to Ride" by Haynes [ISBN 1 84425 220 5]. Great book and got it from the library. The scary bit was the Hazard perception bit [don't press the mouse too many times like I did!!!]. I tested myself by using the DVD called "Driving Test" which is LDC approved and cost £7.99 from Sainsbury. Best thing is that it tests you on both areas.

Best of luck,

C

the theory test wasnt so bad when i did it(2000), from speaking to people who have done it more recently the hazard perception test can be difficult but the primary questions are mostly common sense.

Totally agree. An ounce of common will get you through all except the hazard perception bit....just need to understand what they're asking you to id!!

Good luck!

Ditto. The theory test is a piece of p!ss.

The perception test however is something which always, and still does, baffle me.

What I mean is, you see a potential hazard appearing on the screen, and then at the point you see it you have to press the button. BUT, dependant on the level of training you have had (in cars & on bikes) surely changes the time you see it, does it not. I mean, I have done the advanced car malarky, and the whole point of it is to look SO far ahead. Not just 100 metres, but round the bend (if you can see through hedges, etc, etc).

So, for example, on test, the screen shows you riding down the road. In the far distance you see a pedestrian walking on the path. Do you press the button now to register you've seen them & that you'll be keeping an eye on them, or do you wait until your within 10 metres when you see the obvious 'stepping out in front of you' ?

I found myself pressing the button more than once on each hazard just to make sure the computer had registered I'd noticed it. But, surely thats not right.

I’ve not done the hazard perception test but I have heard it’s quite difficult. I’ve been told of a group of police driving instructors who tried out the test and all failed. This is because they were spotting lots of things they considered to be hazards and were clicking away but the computer “guessed” they were just continually clicking in the hope of getting it right. Good luck with it and let us know how you got on?

PS I wonder if the hazard perception test will include any of the following:

- Diesel spill on roundabout.
- Sunken manhole cover mid corner.
- Myopic Volvo driver looking straight at you then pulling out of the junction directly in front of you.
- Aggressive rep. mobile driver closing the “filtering gap” just to stop you moving up the queues of traffic.
- The bus/lorry driver that pushes halfway past the restricted moped giving it a full 10cm clearance, then pulls back in when only two thirds of the way past.

Yeah, I found it best to
1)Click when I saw the hazard (Kid running across park chasing after football)
2)Click when I was meant to see the hazard (Football bounces into road)
3)Click again as the kid enters
4)Click again as the car starts panic breaking <-- yes car, they dont bother doing a seperate film for bikes.

Heres a rough idea of why.

1) Clicked too early outside of "Hazard Window" 0 points
2) Maybe Perfect, max 5 points, still maybe too early
3) Just in case the first 2 were too early, either 4 or 3 points scored
4) Kinda "saving grace" click. Again just in case. either 1,2 or 3 points scored.

Do that for each bit and you will pass. Don't click much more though or it'll think you're cheating and you'll get 0 points.

Did mine last summer, the actual test was easier than the computer programme I bought and only took about 18 mins to score 100% (never managed that at home) which I was really pleased with. I found the Hazard Perception harder, but still got through. My wife is studying for her car test, and they look very similar to me (except for the obvious bike specific parts). Best of luck!

Did mine last year and only a very few of the questions were specific to bikes, the already posted advice on the hazard perception is good

Thanks guys! I did my car theory a few years ago just before the hazard test was introduced. On your advise went and bought a hazard CD so we'll see! I'll let you know how I get on!

Check out the on-line practise test to see how you do. Not sure if they vary the questions much. I got full marks for my bike test, 28 years after I took it originally.

Well I passed! One step closer to getting on a bike!

I got 35/35 for the multiple choice and 54/77 for the hazard awareness.

Well done.

Before you know it you'll be sat in your front room waiting for the delivery van to pull up with your new toy inside

Urm well ya see now thats the problem! Gotta wait a while to get the cash together unless my parents are feeling rather generous! Although I am soon to acquire an MZ. Apparantly it's a 125 and has a rather ugly white fairing! But it's free so wont matter if i drop it!
