I've done loads of trackdays in cars, but only recently got back into bikes and although I fancy doing some bike trackdays I fancy getting some instruction in a slightly safer environment.

Anyone got any recommendations? I've had a look at Ron Haslam's race school but it looks to me like unless you're paying a lot of money you don't get much track time, £250 only gets you a half day and 3 track sessions. Maybe that's enough but I think I'd want more - 3 sessions in a half day sounds like a lot of sitting around to me. Don't really mind taking my own bike on track if it's in an environment where I'm not going to get some hero dropping underneath me in a corner or out braking himself and T-boning me

I'm planning on doing the California Superbike School thingy in a couple of months.

Around £500 for a full day.

Race schools do mean that you end up spending quite a bit of time in the classroom doing the theory. This is all well and good, but if all you want to do is practice on track then a track day might be your thing.

On a track day, it's just blind luck whether the riders out there are good or bad, however the faster the riders get (so long as you're not with racers ) then the more accurate line they have to take making them more predictable.

I think your best bet is a track day, novice group. Ride at a pace that's for you and try to ensure there's a bit of space around you. You can usually hear if someone's going to try to get past you so you can allow a bit of room and if they want to go by, they can. Good luck.

I'd recomend the California Superbike School, the days are very well organized, the instruction is 1st class (and despite the apparent high cost, good value).

It's safer than a track day, especially if you still need to build your confidence up.

Hi BobM,

I come from a similar background (track days, race school and the High Performance Course in the car). From personal experience, I too would recommend the California Superbike School. You get ample track time, interspersed with valuable classroom sessins and 1:1 advice. Brilliant!

These folks are also very highly recommended indeed for a day or two's performance training on the road

Thanks for the pointers guys. I think I want a bit in the way of instruction before letting myself loose on a track. I suspect a lot of experience from cars doesn't carry across to bikes too well. I remember when I drove Donington that there were kerbs in some really strange places that apparently were for the bikers' lines.

The California Superbike School looks like just the ticket.

There's a trackday at Pembrey tomorrow which is about 15 miles from me, might pop along for a look.
