Trials anyone?
Discussion
I rode schoolboy trials for a good few years in my yoof (which would be getting on for 20 years ago now :-o ), loved it despite the rather pipe and slippers image it had back then. 'Kickstart' was about all the TV coverage it would get (and the format of kickstart was a poor relation to a 'real' trial). I still believe trials is the best way to really learn about bike control.
Thing is, I'm considering getting back into it
Anyone on here ride and if so, would be interested on your recommendations for a bike?
Last one I had was a Fantic 240 Pro!

I used to many years ago with my Dad, i have my first bike when i was 6 years old i think it was a Wosal... might be wrong.
Between my Dad and I we have had
Fantic 250 (twin Shock)
Yammaha TY250
Honda (this was a 4 stroke and man did it have some grunt)
Montessa, this one was about 10 years ago and much likes todays, very slim and light, nothing like the old Fantic.
I think that the best ones to go for these days are the Montessa's again and the Gas Gas. There is a bike shop near me that does them.
Have fun but you are right teaches you about controlling the bike.

I'm Treasury at Yeadon-Guiseley and District Motor club. We run the Sheffield indoor Trial amongest others. Although mostly it's Neil Crosswaite and Martin Lampkin!!! Son rides in the Yorkshire and East Yorkshire centres, makes for a tough life when you are entering the same trials as James Dabill!!! However in his last 2 trials he came 1st Youth on 50/50 course at Yeadon-Guiseley's Shibden Club trial, 1st youth Club Course at Horsforth's President's Centre. Not bad on a 125!! He's B class and is still learning and trying to get into the National top 20. You can always join in at
Trialscentral and find out what's current. The Fantic is a little long in the tooth these days but a few are still out there. Current makers are Gas Gas with the Pro series, very light and bouncable, Beta with a bike that is normally a docile beast with kind handling charactistics, Sherco are very like the old Gas Gas TXT's but this year went radical. Scorpa are a good frame mated with the old Yamaha TYZ250 motor, and Montesa have the 4RT 4 stroke. Scorpa and Sherco also have 4 strokes but the Sherco has had starting problems and the Scorpa has only just been released in 250 form. Scorpa have a 125 with the TT-R engine and a few riders love em. Trials cost between £10 and £15 to enter And lastly you need an ACU licence these days but it's only a tenner. You can always mail me if you need any further info.

Thanks Jeremy. It's been a good while since I had an ACU licence! I've been distracted by cars (building and racing that is) in recent years as well as having road/off road bikes. Hung up my fireproof overalls for a bit as it's hugely expensive and too demanding of time. Trials will allow me to enjoy some good spirited competition, be very cheap by comparison and gets me outdoors and is damn good exercise!
Will keep you posted of my progress and who knows, may just bump into you on a section sometime. It'll be odd riding as a 'senior'
