After previously starting no problem the bike now won't turn over,it goes through all it's usual checks, needle flicks around the dial, ignition lights all on etc but hit the starter and nothing the only thing that changes is the display,
it reads coolent temp cold before hitting the start button this changes to read EFI after trying to start it, I don't have an handbook so can't check what this means. It's a 2004 RSV 1000R the battery is fully charged the fuel pump can be heard I can't see any obvious loose damage wires it's a got me pulling my hair out any ideas on whats wrong with it most welcome.

I had one like this the other week (Duke 999)
everything as yours, battery was stuffed, take a look at the battery I bet it is slightly swolen,
this indicates it is no good.
Batteries only last about two years when they are turning over large high compression engines.
good luck.
Nick
Ps optimate is a must.

It's not the engines, it's the bloody alarms the insurers insist upon, that kill the batteries

Have to agree with that. My firestorm has just turned 8 and is still on the original battery. I don’t have an alarm and use an Optimate over winter.

My RSV did this. After lots of swearing and tries at bumping it, I worked out that it was the alarm not un-immobilising itself. The alarm is a Datatool System 3.

I would have to arm it and then disarm it for it to work.

My R1 wouldn't start this morning - I only used it a fortnight ago.

I'm off to France in a week's time so I daresay I'll have to replace it to be on the safe side.

Mark - sounds like a problem I had on my Mille recently with the starter solenoid.

Battery was OK, needle dancing around the dial but no turnover. EFi thingum flashing at me etc etc. From what I read if you get multiple clicks when you press start then it is most likely the battery is fecked. Even if a new battery has been fitted often these aren't trickle charged before purchase etc etc..

However my problem sounds like yours, ie. a single click and I could hear the pump priming but no turn over. The clever people on the RSV forum reckoned it was most likely the starter solenoid and they were right. Turns out it was the starter solenoid under the main seat. Got one from Infinity for about £40 i think, replaced it myself and all was OK. The old one had got a corroded terminal and looked mighty sorry for itself. All has been starting/running fine now for a few months so hopefuly the problem is solved.

I found this article on the Aprilia RSV forum site which helped, but it is not easy to read!

Hope you get going old chap and good luck.

Just read that you haven't got a manual. I found this list of downloadable links to manuals on another forum which may be of use.. Not sure if all the links are still working, but might be worth a few clicks around to see as a few may be useful.

Budd,
Sorry my previous post was not very helpful, Milken's comments about the starter solenoid sound on the money, my Ducati is also prone to this. The solenoid itself is usually fine, but the spade terminals to the coil (the thin wires) get corroded and don't make a good contact. Clean them up and all is well again.

Worth a look, it all goes under the general heading of "Italian Electrics!"

I think the problem is down to the fact you have a large high comp v twin motor, alarm system and italian efi, all trying to be run by quite a small battery.

We get thru LOADS of batts on ducs and rsv's.(To the point that we are the biggest Yuasa dealer in the uk !)

I think the Yt12 on the Duc is marginal when new, much less later, and 2 years is porbably max life, even optimated.

Cheers

I'll get them along to you this evening. Thinking about it, they are actually for the earlier Mille although the engine is the same Rotax unit so I can't believe the associated systems will be much different.
