Bike theft in London
Discussion
My company is moving out of the sticks to the Paddington area, and I'd love to commute on the bike, but I'm being made uneasy by all the stories about bike theft in town. I'm not helped by my bike being an 06 CBR 600RR, in the 'can't miss' pearlescent orange and black!
IS it really that bad. Is their anywhere relatively safe to park it?

I've had one nicked from C London, so has a colleague.
If you park it on a road unchained to something secure then I'd say it's going to get nicked at some point in the year. I really do think it's that bad for the desirable bikes. Mine was an newish R6, my colleagues a newish 'blade.
What you will find though is that all the private car parks will let you park for a discount (perhaps 3-4 quid a day). I get on well with my local one and he lets me leave it there for free

Orange you say.
Unfortunately, yes, it is then.
You live & learn though, next time stick to the red.

Or black....They're much faster!
Must admit though, I've seen loads of railings errected next to bike parking "bits" around town lately, so I reckon there's a bit of a safety thing going on....(I'm guessing locking bikes to railings is a good deterrent (spelling!).
i remember reading in an MCN survey recently the Yamaha R1 and R6 and the late Fireblades+ CBR600RRs+ GSXR 1000 (i think all from memory) are the most desirable bikes for theives to take, personally if im going to London on my bike i lock it and park it somewhere where i can see it or hear the alarm constantly, if you want to comute on a bike to save time personally i would go and get an older non desirable one as a second bike to use for the comute.
I won't leave mine in London at all, it really isn't worth it. My first bike (GSXR) was stolen from under the girlfriends flat in a secure compound.
In addition to the theft risk you also have to watch out for muppets on scooters trying to ram their piece of crap into the 4" wide space next to yours - I have lost count of the number of times I have seen people trying to move bikes that don't belong to them so that they can squeeze in
