Need some help/advice guys (or girls)

My Brother in law is going away for some time (doesn't know how long, could be up to 6 months) and is going to be leaving his bike unattended.

He's worried about the petrol going off and the engine not starting on his return.

He has a GSXR 600 injection model if that helps.

Cheers

Graham

he should set it up to store it..

Ie disconnect/ remove the battery - leave only a small amount of petrol in it - then put fresh in when he is ready to go.

Drain the oil - and put fresh in - leave the tyres on high pressure (about 5-8 psi over normal) and off the ground

when he comes back he can trickle charge the battery , put new petrol in - check the tyres etc

I would also treat corrosive metal surfaces with grease including cables and discs (clean carefully before re-use)

or he could call a garage and talk it through with them - also if battery out no alarm so check insurance details !

I did last time he was away but the westfield is stuck in the way and we can't get it in the garage (westi is stuck on axle stands)

If the petrol doesn't go off then he has somewhere just to leave it.

Listen to Marcos (no really).

Get it up on paddock stands (F&R) and run the motor for 15 minutes every 2 - 3 weeks to keep it running, refuel after about 3 months (drain tank if necessary).

Unleaded gets gungy after a while - I had a GPX600 which i left for a year and the carbs were F'd after this time. Not sure if injection would be OK so safer to run it up regularly.

Also get an Optimate battery conditioner and leave it connected.

Check oil/water etc every so often and that should do the trick.

If possible get it out on the road

Cheers Plipton,

He's got an optimate but wasn't sure whether you could leave it connected 24/7 for 6 months.

It won't be going out of the garage if we can find somewhere to store it and nobody we know with space is competant enough to do it.

I've got two bikes that are aren't used much.

One's injected and always starts first time.

The other's got carbs and needs lots of effort to get going due to the fuel 'going off'.

Optimate keeps the batteries nicely conditioned.

If the garage is warm and dry I don't think he'll have too much trouble when he returns.

I really doubt if all this is really required. I leave mine on an optimate all the time when not in use and it's fine and the battery is always on. Circumstances dictated that my bike sat in the garage for 6 months last year and all I did was make sure it was clean, dry, the tyres were at normal pressure, the petrol tank was full to the brim (you're better off having a full tank as petrol fumes are potentially more dangerous than petrol but I can't see it making any difference if the tank is sound) and that was it. It started 2nd time after 6 months and ran absolutely perfectly and did so for the next 7-8000 miles I did for the rest of that year.

You definitely don't want to keep firing it up every few weeks as you'll just promote condensation in the exhaust and unless you leave it running for quite a while each time you'll wash more oil out of the bores than if you just left it alone.

Quite why you need to store it off the ground is beyond me. I certainly didn't and there were absolutely no discernable detrimental effects to the tyres.

Your battery will last a lot longer if you keep it plugged in running the clock/alarm and keep it charged with an optimate than disconnecting it.

Keeping the tyres off the ground is supposed to stop them getting flat spots , never had any probs with mine either ,if you do run it let the temp get high and let the fan cut in by the time that happens the condensation wont built up at it would have got nice and hot if its a stainless system (like the zx6r) it should be ok , if its a mild steel like the zzr prepare for the arse to drop out of it !

if you have got somwhere to ride it , or can get someone to ride it take it out at least once a month , you could even try off road tyres and a bit of green laneing

Yep, it should be fine. Since buying the trev about 3 yrs ago, my ZX6R has only covered about 1300 miles since.

It regularly just sits in my garage, behind trev. Currently it hasn't moved since September, and wont move until at least April time..

The only thing I do, so to fill it with fuel before putting it away, and change the engine oil, before I start to use it again, I'll probably change plugs this year as well… I never adjust tyre pressures or anything else, just sits on side stand. Normally the battery is fine, if not then a couple of nights with a battery conditioner sorts that that. Last year it started on the second attempt, and ran fine for the summer.

Admittedly it only covered about 500 miles last year though…!!!

Just running the engine without riding the bike can be a problem if there is any moisure and condensation in the garage. I found the water evaporated off the exhaust, but condensed under the cold tank, then dripped over ignition leads. If you can ride the bike, even just a mile along the road, this will allow air flow to disperse any moisture.

Unless he's been convicted of something, I guess he's off to the sunny middle east then. Wish him luck, and tell him to place one up Sadams jacksy for England!

Your right, he's just been called in to work and flies out to Kuwait early this evening.

As this came of VERY short notice (he was meant to be going out in 2 weeks) he's just stuck the bike in the garage with the optimate on and is going to hope everything is ok.

Thanks for all your help, will be good for future reference.

Cheers,

Graham

Same thing was always happening to me. A paddock stand an Optimate, an oiled chain and WD40 all over and a double sheet to cover it. Then Change all fluids and clean when he gets back.

Always worked for me
