Bike Security...Any advice?
Discussion
So, due to an office move, I've lost my cosy little underground parking space, and will have to use a public zone on the road. It's quite a quiet location (cul de sac)but I guess I should get some extra security in. I've currently got disc locks for front and rear, and I'll get a thick padlock, however, I haven't got an alarm. Now, I know the alarm is a good idea, but do bikes still go missing with 3 good locks on them.
Or put it this way, would you leave your bike on a public road with just this protection?
Appreciate your advice.

I got an alarm on mine but still wouldn't leave it on a public road without it being secured to something immovable via a big chain.
Unfortunately all the alarms, wheel locks, etc in the world cannot stop someone simply picking you're bike up & chucking it in the back of a van. BIG CHAINS ARE THE WAY TO GO.
On a seperate note, why would anyone nick a black R6 ? Surely everyone knows by now that Red/White ones are the quickest ?

Forgot about that!! Add to that the fact that the right hand fairing has a million dents and scrathes on it, I'd probably be ok to leave the keys in the ignition!!

If there's not something solid to chain your bike to, I wouldn't park it there regularly.

Agreed! If its not locked to something solid if someone wants to nick it its gone v easily.
My gixxer600k3 had Cat 1 Alarm, alphadot, Abus disc lock, big chain and lock but still got nicked hidden out the way off the road in london in April last year.
They came through secure electric gates and knew exactly the space where my physically immobilised bike was squeezed into and removed it without leaving a trace or seemingly desturbing any of the other flat residents. Def a pro job!

Agree with the above - my R6 was lifted with a chain on it (nothing to attach it to). After that incident I wrote to the council and 6 weeks later there were sturdy railings in the bike bay to lock to
A bit stabledoorish but it still pleased me.
Chilli whereabouts are you moving to?

Hmm, worth me giving the corp of London a ring then. I've notived them putting them up all over the place.
I'm moving to the Pru's building, right next door to Cannon Street.
Chilli,
I cannot recommend Xena alarmed disclocks enough - I've been using the XN18 for the last year. Doesn't go off when ants fart, nice and loud when it does go off and is a very heavy duty, sturdy looking bit of kit. eBike give a discount for having it too, so check with your insurer.
I do back that up with a fat chain and lock too......
The only drawback (if you go for an XN18) is the size of it - it doesn't fit under the seat on my CBR600RR, but then I'm not sure how much space you have under the wasp.
Hope that helps.

Might be worth a bit of a walk from a more secure location. I'm sure there's a website listing bike parking locations in the City somewhere.
Steve.
Disc locks on their own are fairly useless. Even a Xena alarm one (I've got one) will be of limited use. If there's another bike around, have a word with the owner and see if you can lock your chains together to make a less movable lump of bike(s). You can also get a pager system that sends you a text when your bike is moved. If you work fairly close to your bike, this could give you peace of mind. If you're after a solid chain, try Almax, but you really need something to secure it to - all the disc locks in the world won't stop 3 blokes listing your bike into a van in under a minute.
