Track day tyre pressures...?
Discussion
Apologies as no doubt this has been covered off a few times...
I'm still really confused as to what pressures I should run this Saturday at Snetterton. The stock pressures are 42 rear and 36 front...
Reading Ride mag, they suggested dropping by no more than 4PSI front and rear but some sites have suggested running 30PSI front and rear! Should't the pressure drops stay in relation - maintain higher pressure in the rear than the front rather than setting them both to the same PSI?
Any thoughts on what I should set them to...? Its a little cooler this time of year so track temp will be lower...
Yours confused,
Shot.

You'll only be taking air out as I presume you're pressure will be higher for getting there.
Then, take one of these with you:
SORTED !!!

Hobo, that looks good - what make / model is it? Good idea - I'd only considered the electric pumps but they're normally way out on pressure readings...
Got mine here:
www.sounddistribution.co.uk/products.asp?recnumber=562
£15
Assuming you're riding to track then it ain't that far from home so it will be fine to ride home on track pressure. You can then change to road pressure when at home.
Remember to change tyre pressure when cold though.

Thanks geezer...
OK first and foremost the right answer is "it depends":
1) If your using stock road tyres (not track orientated) then 4-5psi down on pressure for the track will still leaving it feeling like a road bike and they wont get to hot either.
2) If your running trackday typres (racetecs/supercorsa's etc) then you can go down to 30/30 - but they WILL feel strange if not upto temperature - the ambient and how hard you ride will dictate this.
In summary, you will have to remove "some" pressure from cold - how much depends on how fast, ambient temp, dry/wet track and tyre specifics.
DO NOT remove loads of pressure from a road tyre on a wet track - the tread will close up and NOT clear water - hospital food will beckon.
I run 30/30 on Racetecs and we circulate Snetterton at 1.15 ....

A queue ? You only have to ask him which would take seconds. He'll know off the top of his head.
He still needs to put the air in after he's told me (or rather let the air out)... At Snetterton there's no help yourself air pumps...
That depends whose track day it is ... Mark and the team at No Limits use Holbeach and their chief (also Mark) is cool for you to play with his air hose so long as you leave things tidy ;-)

Snetterton in 1.15
So with Pilot 2CT's (90% road 10% track - they say), what would you reckon for a dry October day at around 15c? Say lower each by 6PSI? I doubt I could lap nr 1.15 at the moment but I reckon I'm probably due a move up to the middle group...

I think your in the right ballpark .... but thats what it is -- there is no exact science to this for trackdays only "guidance" -- the tyre fella on the day will also provide some guidance ..
