My 2002 ZX636 has developed a problem, i went out for a ride on sunday and it started and rode fine. I put it away and now it wont start. The starter turns over and i can smell fuel and see it in what looks like the filter on the side of the bike so i think there is fuel. Anyone got any advice or come across this before??? cheers

Stupid as this may sound, but the fuel tap is set to ON isn't it? I did it the other day on mine banghead Took me about 15 minutes to figure it out.

Edited to say: Mine sometimes resolutely will not start without the choke pulled all the way in.

fuel is good...gotta be spark...perhaps whip out a spark plug and earth it against the block with the HT lead on to see if it sparks ( using rubber gloves ) ...although you may want to check the manual in case it buggers any CDI unit`s....

I'm thinking it's spark but the ignition system is fairly complex on the ninja not just a coil or cdi but switches and igniters and such its so weird it was fine one minute the next nothing lol i was talking about chopping it in for a YZF450 and it don't want to go

When you say de-immobilise was the bike completely dead or just no ignition? I've had problems with the alarm before it killed the ignition at high revs

Do you know what your immobiliser cuts the power to? Typically they cut power to the starter circuit, plus one or more other systems on the bike. If you can recall or find out this, perhaps you can rule the immobiliser in or out of your search.

Just a thought and I don,t wish to appear stupid but I had a similar problem years ago with a Triumph I had.

When putting the bike in the garage I had inadvertently pushed the 'kill switch' the funny thing was that it had stuck half way so looked like it was not pushed in, however it was immobilsing the engine.

You have probably checked but if not worth a look.

The immobiliser works on the pump and on the ignition, its very difficult to check this i'm going to have to throw in the towel i hate kawasaki's grrrr

By de-immobilise I mean that sometimes I'd blip the alarm, turn on the ignition but the bike wouldn't start. If I turned off the bike, armed the alarm, disarmed it then it would start

Ok people i've had my alarm checked and its fine so i'm testing everything else now. The ignition coil is reading low by 20omh's the range is 452-462ohms and mine is reading 429ohms would this cause the bike to be totally dead?? thanks

Is it ECU or carbs? If ECU here's what happened to my ST over the summer.

Sounds exactly the same. Turns over fine but no spark. Alarm ok, no faults showing....

Anyway, the ECU was picking up low compression and stopping the spark. I was told to drop a little oil down each throttle body and then crank it over for about 40 secs or more. It will cough and splutter but eventually fire up. I didn't believe it but it worked (this info came over the phone from Triumph UK technical manager). Once it started there was a lot of smoke while it burnt off the oil. After that it was fine for the trip home (1100 miles).

If you are going to try this make sure your battery is fully charged.

Usual disclaimers, etc.....

P.S. What condition is your air filter in? Just curious as mine was manky.
