Am I missing something? Been rummaging around but only find bloody Ipods, standard car stuff or pocket things.

Ipod, Tesco special etc. too fiddly for bike use; not many bikes can take full-size car kit.

What I was thinking is some kind of hidden box with the memory bits in it, then a handlebar-mounted controller with big LCD and chunky buttons for easy gloved operation...

I guess the controller could be wireless-linked and demountable 'cos you just know it'd be thieved otherwise... or perhaps the whole thing could be in one box rather than two.

Is this a missed market opportunity?

I was thinking along the lines of a bluetooth headset which could work with a phone, satnav and 4GB flash memory MP3 player. Not too fussed about being able to control it on the move, with that amount of storage I could put it on random and be happy all day.

I just put my headphones in before putting my helmet on and then start my MP3 player running and put it n my jacket pocket, tucking the wires in as I zip it up.

Too much hassle making a specific system when a decent set of headphones does the job.

I use Creative EP-630 headphones on my bike. The design of them makes it really easy to put a helmet on without dislodging them.

Just bought a Starcom Advance, you wire it permenantly to your bike and you can the use phone, ipod & sat nav etc. comes with integral headphones for you lid. I've found ordinary headphones too uncomfy.

I just use a 20GB Philips MP3 player - stick it on shuffle, put it in my pocket and away I go. Did 6 hours on the bike yesterday with it playing. I use Koss 'sparkplug' foam earphones which are great until you get to about 100mph, at which point my lid pushes back just enough to make the earphones painful to my ears - sadly, most of my 6 hours riding yesterday were on dual carriageways and motorways, hence almost all above 100mph! My ears took a battering but it was better than the boredom of the motorway!

Must admit, I have huge problems getting earphones to stay in, especially with my new lid which is tighter than a fresh schoolie.

Some kind of flat diaphragms that are installed in the helmet, with enough output so that you can hear them with earplugs in, that's what's needed

Some of these from www.tecstar.co.uk/comms/head_sets.htm, will be a lot more comfortable than normal mp3 player headphones.

Or this? www.alan-uk.com/alan/motorcycle/intercom-products.html

Google is your friend, been looking for something similar myself

Except that you'll be driving the speakers to overcome the wind noise. The wind noise is enough to affect your hearing so you'll just be increasing the overall volume and making the situation worse.

What you need is some ear phones which act as ear plugs such as the shure e2cs I use. They fit very well and don't interfere with taking off and putting on your lid and block as much sound as my max ear plugs.

Mark
