Right, the R6 is staying (decided not to sell it). Got myself a service book & going to convert it track bike over the winter period.
My list of what to do is as follows:
Straight away:
a) Renthal race sprockets & chain (520)
b) Air filter (DNA or K&N)
c) Brake pads (Carbone Lorraine or EBC)
d) Brake lines (HEL)
e) Bodywork
When funds/wife allows:
f) Rear shock (WP or Ohlins)
g) Rear sets (Arrow)
h) Power commander & quick shifter
i) Paint job for bodywork
Then, a set of slicks & I'm ready to rock & roll.
Anyone else got a bit of work infront of them ?

No mate, that's my problem!
However, there's a 2003 race spec GSXR1000 about 20 miles away for sale in MCN, £3k. K Tec front, Ohlins rear, PCM3, quickshifter, Harris bars & pegs, Hindle ex-system, spares inc W&W, ready to race!
Want to go halves on it? You could sell the R6 then!

I think Hobo already has tyre warmers as he has done a good few track days already.

As regards to suspension, not sure really. Onlins internals are around £1500 which is way too much for now. What else could I do ?

Talk to K tech or perhaps Maxtons.
If you are going to take advantage of the grip that slicks will provide, you will need different spring rates and hence damping. Why do you want to run slicks?

can't you just replace the springs and oil which would be about £150 - £200, surely £1,500 is for race spec forks

£250-£300 for a fork revalve and respring with uprated oil for the internals of your o.e suspension at a place like Maxton I`d have thought...good enough for most trackday work ...

I am rebuilding and modding my 2 rgv 250s. Bike number 1 is pretty much standard except for the following:
Aprilia RS250 wheels
Marzocchi RAC43 forks
Radially mounted calipers
Redial master cylinder
Digital rev counter/speedo
Digital temp gauge
One off expansion chambers with carbon end cans
The following are parts I have made for it:
Aluminium rear subframe
Aluminium headlight bracket
Yokes

Fit billet back brake caliper
Manufacture front discs
Put the engine back in the bike!
Finish the billet aluminium heads with removeable inserts
Finish billet powervalves.
I need to finish it for early neat year as I am running it down to France for the French gp in May.
The second bike is a long way off completion. It will have a hand made frame and swinging arm, blueprinted engine, dry clutch, billet aluminium cylinders, billet con rods and sustom made body work.

I think you have to be seriously on it to keep the heat in the slicks to make it worthwhile - only what I've read though... You've done a few track days, right? I'd be interested to know peoples opinions on slicks on the track...
Maybe so. The fact is though that the tyres I am currently running have no tread on the edge (none at all), so basically they are slicks through the corners. Its only in a straight line where I have tread & why do I need it (assuming its dry) ?
I suspect I'll look at the option of a 2nd set of wheels, & probably have wets on these for when its obviously wet.

Because the compound is different with slicks - they take longer to heat up so you have to generate enough through your riding.. even though there's no tread on your road tyres, the compound may still suit you better... Don't get me wrong, you might be able to benefit from slicks if you have the capability...

Hobo, unless you are knoocking on the door of the times the supersports guys set (on production race tyres, e.g. racetec K1, etc) then slicks are a waste of cash for you. How fast are you going round snett, cadwell, brands indy, etc?
1) they are more expensive
2) they have an entirely different tyre construction. The fact that they have no tread is the only thing the have in common with the edge of your curent tyre
3) you will need to choose a compound, unless you go for a 'trackday' slick, which is literally only a racetec with no tread on, rather than a full race slick.
4) they take a lot longer than a raetec type tyre to heat up fully
5) they can only take a few heat cycles prior to becoming greasy and really starting to move around on you
6) they let go a lot quicker than a prdn race tyre
I would strongly suggest getting your suspension optimised prior to going down the slicks route. To 95% of people (even some racers) they don't offer a massive advantage.
Hobo, have you been running the road legal Pirellis or Metzlers??
Have you tried the Pirelli Super Corsa Pro SC1 or SC2 or the Metzler Racetec K1 or K2 which are race tyres. The national Superstock Cup boys use the Racetecs.
As Fergus has said slicks are unforgiving unless you are about the quickest in the fast group.

I currently using the Super Corsa Pro's.
I just assumed that slicks would be the next step for an out & out track bike.
