Went to Hein Gericke a couple of weeks back with a view to buying myself some new leather trousers (the old pair were last worn sometime last millenium; I did try them on but it was like John Travolta meets the Bee Gees eek ).

So I was poncing round the shop in an assortment of leather and fabric pantaloons whilst me Julie stood around loking glum; coat on, handbag on shoulder mode.

I suggested she try a jacket or two on... so she did (well come on, woman in a clothes shop and all that) but then things got out of hand and before I knew where I was, there I was... handing over enough money to feed an African country in exchange for enough leather to clothe a herd of cattle.

We came away burdened down with jackets, trousers, helmet, gloves... but no boots. My boots are perfectly good, I said, they're only 15 years old, lots of life left in 'em. Those of you old enough to remember when motorcycles had kickstarts and tyres narrower than the average artic might recall a particular style of boot that fastened up the outside with a series of straps and buckles (trials-style, so I was always told)... that's what these are. Someone recently remarked that they should be in a museum but he shut up after I toed him with them a few times.

Anyway, they're not very warm. I'd forgotten how not-very-warm they are until today when I went out and did 240 miles in them. I knew it was going to be nippy when I had to use the windscreen heater on the Transit, so I'd put two pairs of socks on. I was wearing all my new kit (apart from prehistoric boots and last-century's gloves) and wouldn't you know it; I was as warm as you need to be apart from my right thumb and right toes, for some odd reason.

The point of the exercise was to go and buy an ST13 and a deal was duly done, but I think before I go to collect it I might have to have some new boots

If you want to stick with "Trials Style" boots try The Hebo Tech series. They come with a inner waterproof sock and according to my Son(Size 45 euro) are very "toastie". I gather "Sidi" Trials Zero are very good as well.

Well, that didn't take long. Bought some of these:

Alpinestars Effex. £150. Job done

Most of the 'trials-style' boots now make one look like Robocop: fine for mud-plugging but a bit daft otherwise.
