Since my beloved ZX12 was pinched a few months ago I've had nothing but my trusty Hornet 900 to ride around on. It's a great bike actually and for London riding, better than the Kwak. However when the insurance money arrives I'll be tempted to chop the old girl in for something a bit more lively.
My first thought was the CB1300 S (the half faired one) so I was hoping to hear a few views of current or recent owners. Are they much quicker than a Hornet 900? Does a full exhaust system make a big difference with power commander etc? I imagine they make great pillion bikes but any info about living with them is much appreciated.

A friend who has had just about every bike you can imagine has one of these.
Its the longest he has ever kept a bike.
It was also his choice of weapon for the last 2 years when we went to the South of France and Italy, the only time it was in trouble against a brace of Busas was on the Peage, other than that it returned excellent fuel consumption and never really lagged behind .
For touring it does need a tooth or so on the engine sprocket .
It must be faster than the 900 you mention

thanks for all the posts, it's looking the firm favourite at the moment, esp considering pillion is a priority. 900 is excellent for town work but not so comfy two up on long trips. The 1300 feels like a sofa in comparison. I'm likely to go for the S with ABS and while part of me will always think all bikes should be black, I'll be looking for a white and red one. A pc and full system should make the most of it I believe. In fact it's got a great big cat as standard so I'd expect significant gains on the standard 114 bhp.
Another brilliant pillion bike that isn't a Goldwing is the Blackbird which is seriously fast but I've had one of those already and while an excellent allrounder it's all a bit too smooth and lacks the rough and raw excitement of something like a 'busa or a ZX-12. Then again the 'busa is a good pillion bike but the looks of the CB 1300 win that contest for me.
