Right i am coming back to bikes, been away since is was 20 so 14 years without even sitting on one. got a 4 day course booked at mallory park to get me back into it.

However my main question is WHAT FECKIN BIKE ???????

So much on the market and dont really know where to start. certainly dont what a total sports bike as i am 6' tall, i want something with oodles of power, that i can ride comfortably all day long, maybe even go touring on it (so ability to fit paniers might be an idea) etc.

All advice welcomed, oh and by the way current top of my list is a BMW R1150 RT but i am willing to look at all options.....

Hi Patrick: my bro has an R1100S (I think), he seems happy enough, however from a pillion's point of view it's bloody murder

Just got myself an ST1300 (upgrade/downgrade/sidegrade from an ST1100), wannabe-Goldwing maybe but I like it

Triumph Sprint ST, in fact got an excellent "T" plate one for sale, not being used due to personal circumstances.

I used to have one of these. Big, heavy but with lots of torque. Was comfortable for long distance work but could get through the petrol quite quickly if worked. This meant that from a tourer point of view, the FJ was no quicker from Calais to the Med coast of France than my old CX500 as, if I wound the cruising speed up beyond about 90mph on the FJ, the fuel usage lead to more fuel stops giving a slower overall average! (By the way, the ‘reserve’ range is less than 17 miles! I found out the hard way!!)

It was a fun bike but my BMW K100RS did everything the FJ did and still turned in a good 15mpg more and was 150lbs lighter!

Have been down the local bike shop, and chains, sprockets etc are in stock as are filters, and also there is a FJ owners club that are apparently pretty hot on where to get any parts from :-)

Ideal then. Can't fall off (no pun intended ) for 500 bar. I am a big Suzi GSX-range fan but I was told that suddenly engine spares are vanishing and consumables for several models are NLA...

I have a spare Pan Euro but I want rather more than that for it... in fact just the last week or so they seem to have been fetching silly money on Ebay, should have had mine on there!

My instructor used to work there, he didn't have good things to say about it, apparently if you drop the bike or burn a clutch out you have to pay for it.
