Sold my R1200GS between Christmas and the New Year so today made the mistake of test riding a Night-Rod Special.

Sat on it and wasn't at all sure, so told the guy I'd be about 15 minutes.

5 minutes in, just couldn't get comfie with the bike. 10 minutes in and it all started to gel together.

Ended up doing the test route four times and wow!

What a stonking engine, brakes and gears. It just take more effort to get the huge rear wheel to turn in to bends.

When I went to test ride, I was told that delivery would be about April, so I had time to gently break it in to the wife.

However, got back to the office and made a few calls. Found a cancelled order in stock now and take delivery next week.

Just what do I tell her?

I think that she was hoping I'd give up biking now.....

If she likes bikes, tell her you've got a really good deal on the Night Rod, and you love her.
If she doesnt tell her the sale of the old bike fell through, but the new owner resprayed it...

But you have given up biking now ...... laugh

I suggest that the truth is the best policy and the sooner the better. (Might be a good idea to tell her tonight when you take her out to dinner, just after taking the big bunch of flowers home!!!)

I promise to still wave to all the other bikers!

I suspect I might be moving into the garage.

In my experience there is no 'breaking it gently', and 'waiting for the best time' is not a good mixer with holding your breath. If you had the balls to buy it, you should have the balls to be honest about it with SWMBO. You'll end up with less overall grief and your rod won't become an object of resentment.

Nor will the bike.

All my bikes over the years have been bought in a similar fashion.

I remember flying back from Lisbon with Mrs B after a very fine weekend 'sans kids' and telling her that I was thinking of changing my Triumph due to it being too heavy (dodgy back etc). She said OK, however she was deeply suspicious when the new Tuono turned up the following Friday.

They do get over it but best to be give them some sort of warning.

My worst was saying I was thinking of changing the car (Isuzu Trooper) which I believed I had got tacit approval for. Then 2 weeks later pulling into the drive with v shiny M3, I got loads of stick over a very long period for that.

Ah, the one-balled approach! Seriously, do it in person - how would you fell if the situation were on it's head?

It's all rather tongue in cheek really because it's a company motorcycle and I've told her.

Oh and actually it's the no-balled approach!

How about quietly mentioning it during an act of sexual favour?

"How do you like my Night Rod, baby?" will either pass unnoticed, or get you a big slap.

Don't tell her. I bought my ZZR1200 on a whim after taking my ZZR1100 for a service. I decided not to mention it to my girlie. About two months later she asked me why I'd had my nice silver motorbike resprayed a horrible black colour...

My preference would be waiting until I'd taken delivery adn then saying:

"Remember how I sold the GS? Well whaddaya think of THIS!" whilst pointing her at the Night Rod with a big grin on your face.

Either that or turn around to her tonight and say "I know it's taken ages to think about this, but I've found the perfect replacement for the GS. It's a crackin deal and I'd have been mad not to do it." hence making out that it's a done deal already.

Either way, ffs man grow some balls!
