Sh!t....What's going on??!!
Discussion
So, back from a week in the Sun and I get the bike out or the commute. Worried it might not start, but bingo....first time! So there I am driving along, went to put the indicators on....and nothing! Oh well, I'll take it easy and see if I can get it resolved during the day. Hit the A12, and go for a gap... getthrough ok, overtaking a lorry...then everything goes blank and I srart to slow down. I now have a van trying to overtake me on the outside and the lorry next to me. So, I put my hands up and I guess the van drivwer gets the idea and backs off a bit....wnaker.
So I free wheel ontothe hard shoulder, and notice that the ignition had turned itself off. I turned it back on and off I go. Everything is now ok, and even the indicators work.
Any ideas??!!
Cheers.

Nick same thing happened to me on Saturday on the R1, jumped on the bike to nip into town to buy an inner tube for the mtb and the indicators weren't working so I pulled over turned everything off and then tried again....all ok and everything working fine......I reckon I did exactly what you did and didn't turn the key properly to the ON position in the ignition or it could be a strange Yamaha thing.......

That isnt something you can risk happening again untill you suss the fault.
Pull all the fuses and refit , check the loom for any chaffing ?

Hmmm, getting technical now. Is there a "fuse box" as such?
Fuses can sometimes be by the battery. In terms of checking the loom, get the tank up and have a look at the wires down the sides of the frame for abrasions. Had a similar problem on a car and it turned out that the ignition switch was on its way out.

Mate, how strange. Thing is, if the key hadn't been turned properly, it surely wouldn't have started in the first place?!
It's in for a service soon, so another thing to get them o look at.

Nick, I forgot to add earlier that this has happened a few times to me so I now just pull over and turn everything off and back on and make sure all is ok. It must be that the key isn't quite in the correct position in the ignition barrel.

Do you have a Fob on your key? It has been known for the wind to flap these about just enough to wiggle the key in the barrel.
Either remove the fob or fit Velcro to it with a bit next to the barrel.

It's not that mate believe me I do enough miles, it's not turniong the key properly to the on position.

It was just a thought. I'm used to trouble shooting British electrics, several of my bikes are fitted with Lucas 3 position ignition locks, off, nothing and intermittent!

Yeah, perhaps if they were a tad slower, we wouldn't have this issue?!

you honestly expect somebody to admit to that on a public forum ?
No, why did it detail how slow and crap they were??!!
no it didnt, there was a half decent 600RR vs R6 article though
, dont get me wrong i like Yamahas ive had 2, the newer genration R1 though i didnt like much at all when i had one, i didnt get on with it, the older ones i think are great, i havent had the pleasure of riding the new R6 yet but the one i had in 2002 was brilliant.
