My 1999 Sv650 has a high level renegade can on it. It just had it yearly service two weeks ago.

When I start the bike after it rests overnight and after having been at work all day, it starts first turn but there is a LOT of exhaust smoke. However, within a minute the amount goes back to normal.

This happens everytime I start it.

Any ideas? Naughty tesco petrol perhaps?

Is it definitely smoke or is it steam from condensation in the pipes??

I thought about that, but it smells of carbon monoxide. No doubt about that.

Carbon Monoxide doesn't smell of anything, so it won't be that. Do you get any oily smell to the smoke? I'm thinking of oil getting past the piston rings here, possibly as things get warmer, the tolerances close up and the smoke stops. A compression test on the engine when it's cold might show up the problem, a leak down test would be better still as you might ascertain where you're losing pressure, if you're losing it.

Steve.

Agreed, it's worth checking the air box for oil from the breather. When was the bike serviced and how long ago did it start doing this?

Maybe its got a sponge air filter? They might not have wrung it out after soaking it in oil?

Possible, but why would it only smoke on startup and not once it had warmed up.

In that case it's either just condensation from inside the pipe or water getting past the head gasket. If it was the latter you'll find evidence of water in the oil and it'll run like a bastard. I'm willing to bet it's just condensation and absolutely nothing to worry about.

Stood over night and the oil drips down and burns off.

I did this once by mistake and it smoked like feck and stank. Sounds more like condensation, mine does it every morning this time of year.
