as some of you may have read, unfortunatly a friend wrote off my Fireblade last week in a non fault accident, his lawyers have told him the claim will be settled in no more than 6 weeks, so ive been thinking about what to replace with as i want to buy a bike as soon as the money comes through, heres what i thought of.

1.Ducati 1098
2. new CBR600RR
3. GSXR 750
4. Another Fireblade
5. wait until next year for the new Fireblade/rumoured V4 Honda

if i was going to do option 5 i would still want to buy a bike this year though, asi hate been without one but would want to spend a lot less money on one and would want something that doesnt really depreciate much at all, i was thinking maybe an early CBR600RR or an early R1 as they seem to hold thier money rather well at about the £3k mark.

I was watching a back episode of Friends last night and Joey had to make a difficult decision so Phoebe showed him a way to do it. She fired a series of ‘rapid fire’ questions of the yes/no, either/or type at him to which he had to answer instantly. (Including who would he rather sleep with, Monica or Rachel and Joey didn’t answer ‘Yes please’!) Anyway, after about 5 questions Phoebe asked Joeys difficult question and Joey gave an instantaneous answer. Decision made!

All you need to do now is get someone to fire lots of questions including ‘Blade or 1098’, ‘600RR or GSXR’ etc. and your decision will be made.

Oh! And let us know if it’s Monica or Rachel…

if were talking friends girls, definatly Rachel for me, on the subject of the bike i havent got a clue, although im thinking maybe Ducati because i can get rather a substantial discount on one, so if i sold it to get the new Fireblade/Honda V4 next year, i wouldnt lose any money at all, might even make some

Sounds like the 1098 is the plan, provided you like the power delivery of twins. I notice it's the only one you've listed.

well to tell the truth really i want another Fireblade but theres no point getting one now as the new models out at the end of the year/early next year, and its rumoured to be a V4 which is my favourite ever bike engine type, i havent had a great deal of experiene on twins having had all inlines but ive ridden a couple, i do like them , maybe not as much as an inline but i can get on with them, the only thing ive found with them is they seem to rev out sooner than im used to and if i go down the box too early they lock up far easier than an inline, the bike i really want is the Honda V4 if it comes out next year but i dont want to be bikeless until then, the 1098 im sure is a very capable bike and im sure it wont have any re sale problems next year.

The 600 will be the easiest to sell, prob retain most of its value and will keep you entertained until the bike you really want is on the market...

Get the Ducati, and like you say, if the V4 Honda comes out next year go for it.

Sat on the Duke at M&S and it felt ok, even for a longback like me. Look's even better in the flesh.

when it comes to V4s you cant beat a Honda, if they build a V4 replacement for the Fireblade and sell it at the same price as a Fireblade it will sell incredibly well, a V4 will better the torque and power of the manufacturers that still use inlines, sound brilliant and be incredibly well engineered, whereas i would trust Ducati in the engineering department, Aprilia i would have my reservations about, especialy comparing like for like with Honda.

im hoping the insurance doesnt just give me another Fireblade instead of the cash for one though, that would be a big let down, not that its not a brilliant bike, just i would rather wait for next years one.

If you can get the discount its a no brainer duke 1098 all the way and then make some money when you sell to make way for the V4.

Why is that? I know a V engine has more primary balance than an inline but torque is a function of capacity (amongst others) so surely four cylinders at 250cc each should give the same torque?

I think you've got that around the wrong way. The only fault I've had on my RSVR is a failed oil pressure sender - £10 and five minutes to fix (good old quick-release fittings)

I had a catalogue of faults on my Ducati, the worst of which could have cost me many hundreds if I hadn't found out about a recall that the local Ducati dealers weren't aware of.

I agree that Honda have the most experience in V4s, though.

I think it's a no brainer.

You've stated the desire for the new Blade when it comes out, so just get another used one for now which you can use as a trade-in when the new one comes out....simple.

Buying a 1098 just for a short term before a new Blade comes out seems a bizarre train of thought to me.

You buy a Duke because you WANT one, not as a short term fill in......eek

I'd definately stick to the Jap stuff if I was you.

from how i understand it the V4 provides the best of both worlds, the low end grunt of a twin and the top end of an inline, all while having the best exhaust note of the bunch , ive had a go on an RSV and wasnt too keen myself, personally i would favour the Ducati but everyones different.

the motivation to get the 1098 was that i can get a rather large discount on one, so if i bought one and sold it next spring i wouldnt suffer any depreciation as oposed to losing money from buying another Fireblade.
