I'm trying to work out how much a 600cc bike would be to insure. I'm 23, been driving since I was 17, no claims/convictions, bike would be garaged in a Glasgow post code (good area), key phrase is probably 'brand new bike licence'...

Rough estimates as to what I can expect?

What bike do you want.Sports 600 i would say you will pay silly money possibly £1000 or more.If you get a 600 Bandit then more like £500 or £600.It depends on what bike its age and value and the area you live in.It may be nice but in the past have bikes been stolen from there,if so it will affect your premium.

Yeah I was thinking somewhere around the £500 mark would be acceptable. My Clio is £700, so less than that would be preferred.

So something like a Bandit rather than a GSXR then...

To give you an idea when i was 25 i passed my test and was already on a bike with 1 years no claims bonus. It was a brand new bandit with a cat 1 alarm and it cost me £680 fully comp.I would say a gsxr may be a lttle more than £700 (possibly £1000 more).

Do you reckon it's better to start out with TPFT to build up the NCB?

There are some good bikes out there like the above ie Yamaha Fazer,Suzuki Bandit(not as fast) or Honda Hornet. If you just get your licence it may be worth riding one of these for a year to get some no claims built up and a bit more experiance.I know people who have passed and got straight on a R6 etc and been ok but i also know people who have done this and crashed badly.

Just had that same quote (25/never ridden/bandit), with a chain and disc lock, £315 fully comp with Bennetts... Did it change that much or did I say something misleading?

Go for what you can afford as ncb is ncb.however if the bike is only worth £1000 or £1500 is it worth claiming if it gets crashed or are you better stripping it and selling the parts off.Think of what you would make + the excess.

Thats a good qoute. My bike was brand new though and valued at £4000.What value is yours. Also my area might be worse to live in,is it garaged etc. There are so many things that can affect the price.

Edited to say i put Third Party instead of fully comp in a previous post

Good point, I never thought about the value of the bike. As Bandits go these days, I put 1500... Garaged too (well shedded anyway).

Passed my test at 21. I had been driving a car for over 4 years and was clean as a whistle in terms of accidents and points.

Bought a CBR 600 for just over 3k. It cost me £700 to insure TPFT.
Seamed a bit ridiculous at the time but saying that, just been shopping around for a new policy as that was a year ago and H and R have come back at 180 or 320 FC.

A couple of mates have been able to get quite a bit cheaper insurance initially with sporty 600 tourers.

It's always good to phone round a bit
New GSXR600 K6 (alarm garage etc etc) a few phone calls later I'm looking £6-700, so I tried the suzuki insurance which came in at £395 Fully comp plus class 1 business (adds about £50). I was happy but tried Bikesure, and bless her the lady on the phone pushed their broker and got better cover (breakdown, europe etc) for £390.
The old phrase of you don't ask.....
