Had my annual trip to the local bike shop today for the blade's mot (6 years from new now, doesn't time fly) and saw a brand new suzuki gsxr1000 in blue and white. Wow, want one. The 'mode' switch, does that change the engine map? Does it make much difference? Even if it doesn't it looks very cool. The bike looks so small too. Only thing I didn't like was the triangular exhausts and the price to upgrade the swamp monster (good job they can't fail you for griminess).

here you go
"
to select three engine power settings to match various riding conditions, using a three-way switch mounted on the right handlebar.

The engine mapping varies with each setting, and each map was developed using experience gained building race-bike maps for rainy, mixed or dry track conditions. Switching from one map to another is instantaneous, making it possible for a rider to select one map for one part of a racetrack and another map for another part. The system also allows the rider to select a different setting to suit conditions when tyre grip is reduced, or to choose one map for a high-speed racetrack and a different map for a tighter racetrack. "

I saw a couple of them parked up at boxhill the other week, very nice they look too, one had the number plate R1 SUX , which was nice..

The current issue of Performance Bikes has an interesting take on the mapping switch. They conclude it is a fad, a gimmick, pretty useless, but that it is great fun to flick it to 'wet' mode, thwack open the throttle, and then flick it 'full'power mode and enjoy the entertainment.

I went for a test ride on the GSXR on Friday. Very impressive but it's a bit more cramped than my Aprilia. First impression was that it drops into turns quick, scared myself at the first roundabout! Also felt quite a bit more upright and higher seating position.

I've read a couple of reviews and most seem to reckon the power mode switch is a bit of a gimmick. Mode C emasculates it, mode B might have some benefit in the wet. To be honest, having ridden it, the fuel mapping on the motor is so good I just don't think there's a need, it's silky smooth and progressive anyway and very easy to modulate the power with your right hand.

My very kind mate let me have a go on his brand new R1 the other day and that hugely impressed. I felt comfortable on it straight away and the handling was very confidence inspiring - very pointy and accurate but really stable. I also prefer the looks of the R1 over the Gixxer, especially the exhausts. I didn't notice any obvious difference in power delivery between the two bikes, but then I wasn't exactly pushing hard with either. I have to say both were much easier to ride than the Factory.

I ended up parting with a deposit for a black R1 yesterday morning that was in my dealer's other branch but turns out it was already sold They've got a blue one and a red one but I think I might wait. They're raping me on the part-ex anyway rolleyes
