300km/h - why?

It makes sense for the manufacturers, as they can stop chasing customers with ever higher top speed numbers, and actually concentrate on making better bikes, too. Stops quite so much of the push to ban bikes from some quarters as well.
It makes sense for the manufacturers to keep the politicians off their backs regarding ever increasing speeds more like.
If manufacturers stood by their laurels in the 60s we would all be riding 100mph twin cylinder, twin shock bikes ( I mean the Japanese not the British)
Make better bikes. We could have Moto GP technology but I suppose what stops it is money, who wants to pay £25.000 for the latest V4 Honda.
Do sort of agree with what you have said NB.

I think this is the case. There are a number of Euro politicians in particular that would like to seriously restrict motorcycles in order to protect us from ourselves! This is why we had the 100bhp gentleman’s agreement (compulsory in France and Germany) and almost had compulsory leg protectors.
It was getting difficult for manufacturers to ‘justify’ ever increasing top speeds on road bikes. Remember that in less than 10 years top speeds had moved from around 150mph to almost 200mph so in order to avoid severe compulsory restrictions it was agreed to set a limit on all bikes and 300kph was the nice ‘round number’ they came up with.
