Hi Guys,
I'm after a bike at the moment. I only have about £1500 to £2k to spend
I've seen an unfaired sv650 for this but I'm a little worried that they're girls bikes.
I've seen an old Ninja in the price range and I know they're fun
But I also know that they make me do silly speeds when I shouldn't.
So, any thoughts on the SV? I've heard that the magazines always rate them as "Good All rounders" but has anyone here really owned one? Are they good wheelie bikes or are they just a watered down sports bike that I'll get bored of within a month?
Cheers, Andy.
P.S My last bike was a zx6r but I highsided it into small pieces on a track day....

Nothing wrong with SV's. I've had 2 naked 650's and a faired 1000.
Other than top end, they are perfectly swift enough to run rings around badly ridden sports bikes. I've taken a naked one to the track and it didn't let me down at all. Had more grunt out of the corners that a 600 sports bike. Just a shame they came blasting past on the straights.
A relative of mine bought one of the naked 650's off me and had been riding it for the last 3 years. Hasn't let him down and he takes great pleasure in embarrassing sports bikes in the twistys.
My wife owns an 650, but don't let that put you off

bonjour!!!
i got an imaculate '99 sv650 with 14000m on the clock and lower fairings for £1500. its great fun to ride and seems very forgiving if you miss a gear, due to the torque from the v-twin engine. it does seem slightly slow compared to my mates zx-636 but im happy to start slow. (plus its quicker than almost any car on the road so thats enough for me!!)
as for comments about the sv being for the fairer sex i really dont give a frollick what others say.... plus i think il end up keeping the sv and modding it to get the most out of it. new front end, sort the suspension, bore out to 700cc etc. eventually having it as a track bike and purchasing another for the road.
i would have liked to get a gsxr6 but now ive got the sv i would highly recommend it as a first bike, (plus the insurance is cheaper!!) good luck making the choice...

It does have cheap suspension and when you become better at riding it becomes apparant, stick a pillion on the back and it doesn't cope too well (but it does wheelie like a beauty
) I LOVE the engine charateristics, its a v-twin so the same torque as the 600s but much lower down the revs, gets off the line just as quick. 0-60 4 secs ish. But then the IL4's will take off at maybe 50ish and start to pull away from you. You can ride fairly quick without having to rag the tits off it which i like.
If you're worried about a IL4 600 being too much then remember you only go as fast as you twist the throttle, and you'll only scare yourself once. Certainly after you get used to the SV you'll want more.
I've had mine for about 1 year and I am now hankering after a GSXR 750, or a KTM superduke (depending on the test ride and whether i can live without a fairing).
