How do I top up clutch fluid on an SV1000?
Discussion
I'm havinig difficulty changing gears and the hydraulic clutch doesn't seem to be engaging properly. I have diagnosed this to be because from the clutch gauge it is low on dot4 fluid. Question is, how do I add new fluid - I am guessing there is a bleed valve or something I need to loosen, then pour into the gauge and pump the clutch. Sorry for being a numpty - any advice much appreciated...

There is probably air in the system if the resorvoir is very low. Follow the clutch line to the clutch piston and there should be a bleed nipple. fill the reservoir on the handle bars with new fluid.. you'll need a piece of pipe to attach to the bleed nipple so you don't spill any on the bike (brake fluid damages paint), squeeze the clutch lever and hold (might be easier with 2 pairs of hands) then open the bleed nipple and close before the system takes any air in, repeat until the clutch lever is firm... might take a while if there's a lot of air in the system.

You should have the clutch fluid reservoir on the left handlebar. You top up by adding fluid to this but ..... I would be very worried if I needed to add fluid to the clutch system. It’s a sealed system so either it’s got a leak or the clutch has worn so much since the last service that it’s ‘used up’ all the fluid in the reservoir. Both situations are not good.
