...and cos I am procrastinating about studying, I thought I would do some insurance quotes on a couple of bikes I am quite interested in when I pass my test.

Ducati Monster 600cc £2k price tag - 1 yr no claims, £200 excess, first year riding

£160

Triumph Speed Triple 955 £2600 price tag - 1 yr no claims, £350 excess, first year riding

£260

I just love being an old duffer hehe

I had an RSVR at 23 and it cost me £1000 TPFT to insure with 7 years NCB, some wouldn't even quote me,so it didn't seem bad at the time.. Yet someone who had just passed their test was paying £300 for a simliar bike.. just 'cos of age. surely a younger rider with 7 years NCB is a lower risk than a newbie on a fireblade etc.... computer says noooo

Tend to agree with you really, no substitute for experience on the road. However I think due to your age (and I am technically old enough to be your mum BTW hehe) the insurers think that you are just a nutty speed freak with or without the experience. Crap really.

5 years on i'm starting to feel like an old duffer(28), like you say cheap insurance though last time i insured the bike it halved to £500 at 25.. it's just a track bike now,so free insurance and my road bike (650 berg) only costs me £100 to insurecool

It still amazes me how actuary's(ies?) calculate policy premiums.
My first year riding (34) was £700 for a 1999 GSXR600. Buy a brand new R6 and it goes up to £750. Smash it up to the tune of £3,500 and my renewal policy went DOWn by £100.

Makes no sense to me!!!

Age is but one factor.. you add a high risk postcode into the premium calculation mix and see what you get!
Also add in some bonus points and no fault claims or thefts and you can be mid 30s and screwed over for just a 600 like me!
