How old is your lid ?

I have two Arai Quantum F's and it has suddenly occured to me that they are 5 and 7 years old respectively. Should I be looking for a new lid ? is this the excuse I need to get an Arai RX7 ..... or will they still be OK ?

Neither lid has been dropped or banged - merely used on a daily commute 2/3 times a week.

Views welcome ....

I buy a new Arai about every 5 years. Arai's come with a 5 year warranty, so I think this gives a good indication of its useful lifespan.

My Son's. He gets one about every two years but then his head grows a bit.

I noticed my lid was dated 2001. It had only done a few car trackdays/sprints but I thought it best to replace as it was actually getting bike use. Best thing I ever did as my new lid is so much nicer to wear. Fresh foam, newer design with better ventilation, etc, all adds up.

For commuting the Astro-R is worth a look too. A bit quieter than the 7.

Nolan N94 is about 9 months old and my Arai RX7 is nearly 2 years old.

I was going to say 2-3 years but, having been rear-ended last night when my head/helmet hit the road, looks like 12 months for me.

My RX7 is 3 years old and won't get replaced until I've had it 5 years. I only buy Arai or Shoei and either are good for 5 years of moderate use unless you come off, then replace straight away.

When I was couriering though my old Arai needed replacing after a year. The lining and shell were fine but the strap was knackered and had expanded to twice it's thickness where it had too many soakings and too much use.

My RX7 is six years old, never been dropped. I don't plan on buying a new one for a while yet...

This can be a problem, I was in the states a couple of weeks ago and found an RX7 Mccoy replica for about £330.
When I checked the strap for date of manufacture the thing was already six years old !
There does seem to be some confusion as to when the 'life' of the helmet starts.

Fine thanks - read the boring stuff on 'rear-ended' thread!

Thanks for the replies people!

I went and tried an RX7 today ..... only to find it did't fit me that well frown

I tried other Arai models which were OK and one Shoei Multitec flip up lid which was probably the most comfy.

What is the 'new' Arai equivalent of my existing Quantum F ??? The man in the shop thought it was the Arai Chaser but looking at their website it seems more likely to be the 'Viper' - anyone any idea ?

I went from Quantum F to RX7 and the latter is a more snug fit. It will give with a bit of wearing - you'll just need to wear it around the house...

Do you think I should change mine? It's ten years old, but I love it.
