Hi,
I am going to look at an XJ 600 Diversion (N Plate with 24000+ miles) on Friday. As a 40 year old born again biker, I would appreciate any views on the model and what to look out for in terms of buying.
The bike is for a daily commute of 50 miles and my reckoning is that it will be a lot cheaper (mpg) to run than the car (check my profile).
All the best.

Have a look at the below list, or/and ask the owner/DealerI am going to look at an XJ 600 Diversion (N Plate with 24000+ miles) on Friday. As a 40 year old born again biker, I would appreciate any views on the model and what to look out for in terms of buying.

Brakes: Check colour of brake fluid and condition of hose's, and while your down there check the pads, and make sure the caliper is not sticking.
Have a look at the oil filter, does it look like it's been there for years. behind the exhaust headers. Check the colour and level of the oil through the sight glass, clutch casing side.
Should ideally try the bike from cold, there should be no excessive ticking noises from the top end or smoke from the exhaust. If you can, have a test ride and make sure you can get all the gears.
Chain and sprockets: Ask when they were last changed.
also ask if there is any service history.
Check that the ignition key opens the tank.
They were designed as a cheap and cheerful commuter bike, so should have attracted the sensible type, down side to that is that they may or may not have any kind of mechanical knowledge.
Like any Twelve year old bike it depends on what the previous owner/owner's, were like.
If it looks and sounds OK, at that age, it should be.
