Ok, he knows Laguna Seca but when has he ever ridden a MotoGP bike. He last rode a GP bike (a Yamaha 500) back in 1992 and a 250cc bike (which an 800 is supposed to be similar to in handling) before that.

Sponsorship opportunity I'm sure but I think he'll only been seen when he gets lapped. Kurtis Roberts must be smiling, he won't be last in his home GP.

Harsh, maybe? But there are plenty of better qualified riders available to take Elias's place and actually put in a good performance than Duhamel.

With Elias certain to miss at least the next two rounds following his femur fracture at Assen, Gresini Honda is rumoured to have secured the services of DuHamel for Laguna Seca - the last race before the summer break and a track the 39-year-old Canadian knows intimately after many seasons in America. Indeed, with the notable exception of 1992 - when he finished 12th in the 500cc World Championship for Team Yamaha France - Duhamel has raced in the AMA championships continuously since 1990, winning eight titles - one in Superbike, five in Supersport and two in Formula Xtreme - plus five Daytona 200 victories. It is that immense experience that Gresini Honda reportedly plans to exploit at the notoriously tough-to-learn Laguna Seca - where DuHamel's former rival Nicky Hayden has taken victory on both of MotoGP's previous visits.

2007 marks DuHamel's 13th year with American Honda. He currently sits fourth in the AMA Superbike championship, with a best finish of second so far this season. Gresini Honda, the only RC212V team to use Bridgestone tyres, has been the best performing satellite Honda outfit during a difficult year for HRC - Elias and Marco Melandri having taken one podium each from the first nine rounds. It is not yet know if Gresini also plans to field a second rider alongside Melandri at the German Grand Prix, which takes place just one week before the US GP.

Duhamel's an old charger that's for sure, but Jake Zemke, could have been a good choice, a lot younger and a bit more fire in his belly.

Hey, I forgot about DuHamel. Hope Chas & Davis finishes in front of him.
