Morning all,

Couple of queries for you guys.

1. I have a very nice 1999 Suzuki SV650s. They chappie I bought it from really kitted it out. Single seat hump, colour coded bits on every part of the bike (candy blue), high level Renegade can, full fairing, tinted screen... the list goes on! I have garaged this bike. I have used it. It now has about 28,000 on the clock. I have used it almost every weekday for 3 years in rain or shine. Of course, the bike has been serviced regularily and is in perfect mechanical condition (though it spits a bit when cold). Condition is very good for a 9 year old bike. Downside is that some asshole kid kicked it over once (on Blackfriars Bridge road) and it has scratches on right fairing. I have touched them in however with factory paint. I think there is a picture of the bike on my profile? Not sure...

The ££££ question is this. I need to get rid of it. What's it worth? Ebay best place you think? PH seems to sell more cars than bikes...

2. I now need a replacement! My commuting has dropped from about 150 miles a week to 50, and will now drop to about 30- 40! I don't want a litre bypersports bike like an R1, but want something I can enjoy. Not looking to put in more than £3,500. Needs to be able to make mincemeat of traffic. Its a central london commute for me. But for something special maybe...

Been thinking of (started about an hour ago!):

1. R6
2. Monsters
3. 748 (just so damned pretty, and with the short ride if its doesn't wake up, I'll just walk to work!)
4. Triumphs (daytonas and triples)

So, any comments ph'ers?

How about a supermoto as a traffic killer?

I’m not sure that an R6, 748 or Daytona would spring to the top of my list of bikes best suited to ‘make mincemeat of traffic’ in central London, especially as their ‘bigger brothers’ (the likes of the R!) have a riding position that is no more radical but have the advantage of more low down torque.

If I were looking for a ‘city traffic killer’ then I too would be looking at some of the super-motos. Good height for good visibility, good turning circle, comfortable position, lots of low town torque and narrow where it counts.

I can't see the point of getting a 600 sports over a thou unless insurance is an issue. Given the miles you'll be doing the running cost won't be that different. I understand that the thou is 'wasted' unless you go out for a blast out of town every now and again but then so is a 600. As has been said they'll be just as inappropriate for commuting as each other.

In short I'd get what you fancy best unless you need a better turning circle (I never have) and then get a supermoto or something. Although boring it probably comes down to what you want to carry in terms of work clothes, laptops, lunch etc.

I only have to do 10 miles each way at the moment but this changes on a regular basis so my choice is a blade with a waterproof topbox. I've had it from new and it's scratched to feck so from my perspective it's absolutely ideal and practical. However, if I was only doing 5 miles each way and it was likely to stay that way and I was going in to london I'd probably serious thing about getting a 125 shitter of a scooter to dump in town and something desirable to do distances on.

You say you don't want a hypersports bike like an R1 but have listed an R6, 748 & Daytona, err there's not much difference really btween them and an R1, if anything the R1 would be easier to ride due to the extra slug of torque it has over the others you've listed. I use my R1 daily on a 70 mile return commute and it is fine.

If you are only doing about 30-40 miles a week why not get yourself a cheap twist & go for the commute and also something a bit special for those sunny days and weekend blasts.

Have a couple of cars for those sunny days! I love my biking, but its more a necessity than a passion (compared to the cars in my life anyway!).

In my limited experience there is plenty of real world difference between for example, an r1 x r6. The r6 is lighter, easier to manouver at lower speeds and the insurance is very different!

I beg to differ, in the real world an R6 is really no lighter than an R1, easier to manouver at lower speeds, I don't think so as they are both sports bikes, insurace costs all depends on how long you've been riding i.e NCB and your post code.......

I was speaking from personal experience as I have owned few 600cc & 1,000cc sportsbikes and the R1 is easier in my humble opinion to get on with, they've got the torque when you need it instead of banging down the gear box to get past something......as always each to their own.

Check on bike trader and see what similar bikes go for. High mileage hits values pretty hard I think. Not because it has any adverse effect on the bike just because there will always be other bikes available with less miles on.

Hi mate,

Assuming you got all of the original parts with the bike, put them back on to sell it and offload the aftermarket goodies separately. This will maximise your £££.

For a replacement, how about a Buell XB9 CityX??

Hi mate,

They break down just great - guaranteed to do so wink

Seriously though, they are good town/commuter hooligan bikes - its what they were designed for.
