Law requires all riders to wear helmet (unless you wear a turban?)

Shouldn't the govt be looking at the bigger picture and add suitable body protection too, like appropriate shoes etc...? I can't imagine how hot it must be wearing all that gear in the summer, but if it helps reduce the chances of you losing your skin, or shattering a bone in your limb, dis-locating a joint... surely it'd be a good thing for all involved?

Must be great to ride a powerful bike at high speed in a t-shirt and shorts, but not so good if you come off it. Then someone has to come and put you back together...

I suspect that part of the appeal of riding a bike is the freedom.

A sensible person will wear the right gear, but strictly out of choice.

Glassman why are you worried? If somebbody wants to ride a bike only wearing shorts its their look out.

wearing shorts and falling off will only hurt the perosn who made the choice. whats the problem?

You're right, I shouldn't be bothered. How paramedics, doctors, nurses etc spent their time has never been of any concern to me. And why should it?

If Ushi Moto on his Ichyfanny comes off as he tries to get his knee-down on a roundabout... we should leave him there 'cause it serves him right for being a prat.

We all pay for smokers, why shouldn't we pay for bikers?

Ah, but was he worth looking at? A fit naked male torso is fine, but when it's flobby and yurkkk ... Or there's a gold medallion dangling...

These guys 'air' their fantasies on the P&P - I'm sure they won't mind a bit of sexual equality if us 'girlies' do the same ... getmecoat

It was fit in the fit sense (bit like a ziggy from BB body) but I prefer something slightly more muscular/bigger smile

Effectively the law is framed to require the rider to wear the most effective safety device, that is the easiest to use (put on) and the easiest to classify and test.

There is no single easy to apply standard for motorcycle protective clothing (Ok there are EU standards but clothing that passes them is as rare as hens teeth) and it would be somewhat complicated to create or impose one without massive inconvenience. Imagine for example trying to impose the law how are police going to tell the difference between a leather jacket designed to pass whatever standard you come up with or one that is simply a fashion item.

Personally I would like to see some effort going into some body armour like devices that would allow you to stay cool while riding in summer but still offer some protection. I suspect that something along the lines of a strap on pad system that you can were over the top of your summer clothes with protection being localised where it is really necessary.

...And then they moved us - from P&P to Biker Banter, where I'm sure the standard of abuse is good, but not as good ... I'd better getmecoat again ...

On spying a very pretty young lass in Brighton today, riding her scooter in her helmet, a pair of trainers and a very skimpy bikini along the seafront, I thought to myself "she'd get it" followed by "ouch, if she falls off, that is REALLY gonna hurt" yikes

But someone riding at 60mph while wearing full leathers etc. and meeting a tree/lamp post/lorry/car/wall/bus is also going to find that it also "really hurts"! It is only one very small step from those that want to make leathers/boots/gloves compulsory to those that will make two extra wheels and tin all around compulsory.
