You can use the clutch second cause its hard to give it enough to loop it. But youll likely do a clutch in the process of getting it right - like Im doing now.
I just give it a big wristful at 50 in 1st and roll off as it comes up. It stays up till I run out of revs cause the balance point in 1st seems to be quite hard to maintain. Much rather be clutching it in second but have so far only managed this on a GSXRthou K5 and I didnt put the front down till 130. That certainly focussed the mind...
Ive read loads of how-tos and shite, but I reckon youve just got to practice. And as Im not so hell bent on doing them that Im willing to damage the bike, its a slow process.
Need an old snotter to learn and make mistakes on really.

seriously it takes time and practise, start small and build from there slowly
I know, I'm going red as I write this but after a couple of crashes - the last thing I wanted was another caused by a wheelie going wrong!! I know it will wheelie but I shut off! I really want to do it!

people i have spoken to that learnt at wheelie schools had to start again from scratch once they got back on there OWN bikes
the wheelie school bikes run rear sprockets the size of dustbin lids and have anti flip ignition cut out switches fitted,so they dont really translate to what we ride on the roads
just a thought

I'm sensing the need for a PH wheelie school day, so we can all wander off and learn decent wheelies on someone elses old shitter of a bike
Recommendations from the floor?
Me and a few mates went and did the wheelieschool a couple of years ago with Paul Gower. http://www.thewheelieschool.co.uk/

It was a good laugh - 1200 Bandits stuck in first gear - no gear leaver to change gear. Does not have the antiflip devices fitted like some schools - but this teaches you your limits for when you get back on your own bike. They do not teach you clutch wheelies at all.
Some people were wheelieing gods by the end of the day, some never managed a wheelie all day! I was somewhere in the middle.
I then went back to my own bike (SV650s at the time) and never managed to get the wheel off the ground. Intermittently I have tried on my GSXR600 with varying success - i.e. it may work, it may not! However I took my Bandit in for a service the other day and was lent a SV650 - best fun I have had in ages. Wheelieing at will the whole way into work.
Got back on the GSXR and think I have cracked it - wheelies whenever I want now!

That is a good point but I think for me just the experience of doing it would give me the confidence to try and relearn on mine. the wheelie school bikes run rear sprockets the size of dustbin lids and have anti flip ignition cut out switches fitted,so they dont really translate to what we ride on the roads

absolutely fair one, but might well be a reasonable way round the OP (and up to a point, my own) inbuilt sensibleness in wanting to avoid flipping a pile of expensive plastic and metal in order to learn. the wheelie school bikes run rear sprockets the size of dustbin lids and have anti flip ignition cut out switches fitted,so they dont really translate to what we ride on the roads

Personally, am happy enough with small power wheelies when in attack mode, and feeling the front come up over crests, but wouldnt mind getting over the mental block about hefting it up at will, if you see what I mean?
And from what I gather, its different from bike to bike anyway as regards bite points, so if the mental bit starts things flowing, its all good, dustbin sprockets or not. Its either that, or I get the CBR600 repaired, then go out and break it some more

I had the front up twice on the R6, completely by accident. I'd be up for a day at school, even on my bike, but tuition would be a must!

Paul Gower is a great bloke (although he will distract you with his stand-up wheelies).

I thought I read on hear ages ago when I asked, that it was 'gay' to power up wheelie and the only proper way was to 'clutch it up'...
I'm confused now...
Yeah, the MCN tutorial teaches you to use the clutch,.I'm confused now...
