I have a little message for the Nissan Primera driver that I had the misfortune to have dealings with this morning in Deptford.

The Blackwall Tunnel was closed this morning, and this means that the traffic through South London is always going to be very heavy. I am sorry that you have a jealously of motorbikes and the fact that they can move quicker through traffic than a car. I am also sorry that I had the audacity to use my horn to ask you to move forward into the 10 feet of space in front of you so that I could get between you and the traffic island.

However that is where the apologies end.

If you decide to leave your car and physically try to pull me off my bike for having the audacity to use my horn whilst trying to make progress, and then push me in my chest when I have managed to leave the bike and get the stand down, then you have to expect a kevlar glove to the face with 17 stone of weight behind it. I have no idea what this would feel like, but from the claret coming from your nose (or was it lip?) I would imagine it is not that pleasant.

Many Thanks to the rider on the Deauville, and the guy that got out of his car in the BMW and gave me your details as witnesses in case Primera driver decides to take this any further. Special thanks must go to BMW driver who also spotted that Primera drivers car tax expired 12/06.

If you want to sit in comfort, dry, warm and with the radio on in a car - you have to expect your journey to be slow.

If you want to sit in the rain, and the cold, knowing that you are running the gauntlet every time you start your journey, and have a 5 minute krypton factor undressing/redressing exercise every time - then you expect to be able to make progress where possible.

Moral of the story - Bikes are quicker than cars in traffic. Deal with it. Curb your jealousy - and if possible move aside to let bikes through. If you decide you will not move aside for bikes, there is nothing I can do about it. But don't try to physically manhandle a biker of his/her bike in any circumstances. I noticed that you locked your door when you got back in your car - which I think was wise as there were another half dozen bikes there by this point.

n.b. To the biker on the floor by the Mcdonalds at Surrey Quays, I never saw what happened but there were another two bikes with you, and ambulance was already at the scene. I hope you are ok.

I think you did the correct thing, I don't supposed this got reported to the police did it? Def sounds like self defence to me.
The blackwall tunnel problems northbound have caused a lot of misery to many people this morning. Added to that and the general road conditions not being brilliant today.

Luckily I've only really had one driver get out and physically assult me at a set of lights.. well he punched me on the shoulder to get my attention which I just about noticed through the armour. He took offence to me giving him a gareth hunt of the nescafe advert shake when I overtook him and slowed right down as he'd driven through a red light to turn right as I was coming through on green with correct right of way and had to emergency brake to avoid hitting him. He just was completely oblivious to the fact he'd run the red dangerously and kept on about how the gesture caused him offence (alternative words used here) I just kept shouting at him no mate you were in the wrong for running the red you 'cretin' (again alternative words used).. with that the light went green I put the bike in gear and buggered off.

I have not reported it - and from my own stereotypical view of the driver, type of car (no tax etc etc), location, origin etc - I don't believe he would have any inclination in dealing with the BIB. If he does then I will contact my two witnesses.

I am not losing any sleep over it, put it that way.

Yer I did exactly the same with my incident of course the bloke never went to the police either.

Without going non PC here I know 'exactly' the style/type of person/car you are refering too. I'd lay a huge bet on nothing being legal on the vehicle in question to even allow it to be on the road, let alone if the driver actually had a valid license to drive.

Shocking behaviour eek

Now I get called various names by car drivers a few times a week as I filter through and even p1$$ off the occasional numpty biker, but have never been assaulted for it.

Luckilly you kept your balance on the bike and managed you deliver a face full of kevlar before it got really nasty wink

Be carefull out there kids smile

Nice darts Chris!!

However, a shame you had to be put into that situation in the first place. Now, I can understand bad driving....see it everyday. Some people just aren't very good at it. BUT, when you get people that will deliberately move over to block your progres....well, I just don't understand it.

Always amazes me that anyone would pick on a guy in full biking gear, indeed carbon/kevlar knuckles must be very effective as would a head butt from a full face helmet.......

Beautifully stated.

The temptation is there so often, it's just that I'd probably fall off my bike as I took a swing.

Nicely done Sir!

Closest I came to similar was when a chap stopped, opened his door, stuck a foot out, then looked in the rear view mirror (i'd stood up at this point) and thought better of it - he closed the door and buggered off sharpish. It was funny though as i'm built like a whippet and couldn't fight my way out of a paperbag, but i'm 6'2 and look quite chunky in full bike gear hehe

As a biker from 40 years ago and a car driver since I cannot understand why many car drivers deliberately block the progress of bikers. I always move over to assist bikers to made progress - it doesn't slow me down and it assists them. A number of my friends seem to have the attitude that if they can't make progress why should a biker - they think I am daft for assisting bikers.

I have mates that are exactly the same.

I know that anyone reading this forum will not think that way - but it does amaze me how the jealousy factor comes into play with drivers that have never been on a bike. That is all it can be. If I see a gap I cannot fit through - I will actually leave the gap so a cyclist can get through - and I generally hate cyclists!

I thought it was interesting on Top Gear on Sunday that one of the modes of transport was not the motorbike. I suppose it would have been no contest to any of the other modes - but it would have been good to have seen.

To be honest I don't see many drivers moving to block me anymore, maybe I just don't notice the pathetic attemps anymore. I do see the odd one or two moving over to make more space for me, hey I even had a cop car do this for me the other week coming up to the IMAX roundabout on the southbank. I do always make sure I thank drivers who specifically do this for me.

I posted Sunday on the main TG thread and mentioned this very thing. To put it frankly if I was asked to do that same journey as the TG boys on my bike I would have more than won!

Even if it wasn't taking part, a motorbike came joint first without even trying. The camera bike for Hammond!
