I've got a Frank Thomas Aquapore all in one winter suit which is getting really mucky and quite smelly, what with all the dirt and crap on the roads being flung onto it every day.
I was thinking about removing as much as I can from the suit - armour, lining etc and washing it in the washing machine.
Has anyone ever done this or ca offer any advice?
It's still 100% waterproof and i'd like it to stay that way really.

Don't you just buy new stuff when things get dirty?

Did mine last week for the first time in 4 years! It was starting to stink. (Admittedly this is a bit like the Trigger quote from OFaH with the broom - as it is the 2nd jacket and 2nd pair of trousers!)

Take the lining out and wash that in washing machine on a 30 wash, then get a washing tablet and some comfort and handwash the jacket and trousers (in the garden is best as it makes a hell of a mess) - and hang to dry.

Smell much better this week!

Kind of agree-ish..., what is this washing you speak of!?!

Most of my kit is filthy and smelly but I lik it that way, gives a nice ageing paterna!

You could take it to a dry cleaners. My local one washed my Rukka Kit & re-proofed it for about £30.00.
Not exactly dirt (excuse pun) cheap I know, but it's clean, wateproof again (the goretex gets clogged after a while) and I have not shagged the wife's washing machine.

Unless it can be machine washed I just stick mine in the bath and wash it in there and then when it's dry reapply some waterproofing stuff like fabsil.

If it's a breathable fabric don't use a normal detergent and especially not a fabric softener, this will simply block it up.

Take out the armour and also wash the thermal lining separately. Wash it all by hand, never in the washing machne even if it says it's OK. modern machines are quite aggressive and can ruin a £300 jacket in 10 mins.

For the main shell get the Nickwax Tech Wash, it might be £5 a bottle but it's not a detergent that will damage the breathability or the water repellent nature of the fabric, gently hand wash it, possibly several times, then drip dry, then tumble dry on a very low or cold setting if the garment allows it. This will open up the small holes again if it has them. Don't wring, just squeeze the water out gently then drip dry.
