Hi everyone,

I could really use a little bit of help on something here. I have a Suzuki GSXR600 SRAD 1998 (Registered in 2001) model that’s only done 8000 miles. The battery is a bit flat and needs replacing but other than that all else is good. The problem is now with the bike and the cold. I taken it out on Monday for the first time in over a month, I had to jump the bike due to a dead battery mind but that does not seem to be a contributing factor to the problem.

The problem is that once started the bike runs fine, and the engine sounds clean and runs well. But once I get the bike running at 40 – 50mph with an air temperature of 2 – 4oC centigrade for about 10 minuets the bike starts chocking up. The engine all of a sudden starts sounding like a Harley Davidson biglaugh and every time I come to a stop and the bike goes to idle it just flat out stalls with out fail.

I tried stopping the bike and adding a bit of throttle till the engine got up to about 110oC and after that the bike ran fine. But once I rode it over the M9 the same started to happen once the engine went down to 65oC. The bike does not stall if I keep the choke ¼ turned, but that does not help since my choke leaver is broken and once I let go of it, it resets to off.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem here, is it just SRADs don’t like the cold or is something wrong on my bike that may need seeing to?

Thanks all for reading.

Does the bike have carbs - it's possible their icing up, although on a UK spec bike, there should be carb heaters. A problem that I know my SV suffers from, is when the sensor to trigger the heaters to run is not sufficiently exposed to the external environment and hence the heaters do not work when they should. I'd check a gixer specific forum for similar sypmtoms being reported and go from there.

Steve.

Carb icing almost certainly,

Additives sometimes work,
check the carb heaters (if fitted),
don't stop or let the revs drop biglaugh

Never did totally cure it on my SV650

Hi , i had a GSXR 600 SRAD 1997 , had the same problem as i travel up and down the A1 , 13 miles each way for work and back,
found out it was carb icing due to the ram air effect , bike was choking up as you described and would stall at the top of the slip road as i came off the motorway , give it 30 seconds or so and the engine heat would de-ice the carbs and away i would go again ,
i did mangaged to stop it happening by cutting two pieces of soft foam about an inch or so thick and popping them into the fairing where the inlet grille is , engine temp came up a bit more and no more stalling, used it that method for two years on the trot all the way through the winter with no problems at all , just pop the foam out when the weather warms up a bit. Give it a go .

As above, carb Icing. EXACTLY the same happened to mine. I just hit it really hard wih a hammer, a few kicks to the fairings and it seemed to be ok.
