Hey guys! How you all doing?
I'm not going to ask the typical "What bike should i get" question as i've read probably in excess of 100 of them in the last 48 hours and they annoy me too now!

I've been driving a car for coming up to 3 years, and want a bike! I'm planning on doing the CBT and then an intensive training course before the end of jan (feb at the LATEST!), and i think i've settled on what bike i want..

That bike, i tell you, is a Suzuki SV650.

Just asking people's opinions on it at the moment, it'll be restricted to 33bhp as im 19, 20 in march, which apparently this bike can handle pretty well!

Well, a bit about my self! My names Gav, im 19, 6"3ish, weigh about 73kg (no idea what that is in oldie form) and i'll be using the bike everyday! Some days to ride 4 or 5 miles, sometimes down the motorway a goor 50miles, 100 mile round trip to get to work.

I don't want to start with the 125cc or anything lower and if it's suggested i'll just gloss over it smile

I've got my mind set on somehting that i can do my DA test with on my 21st and not have to buy a new bike, just take the restricter off!

So, point of the post - views on sv650's as a first bike for a relatively tall lad!?

Cheers all and hope u all got biking things for xmas! I didn't frown

welcome Gav, nice bike. I only passed my das back in Ocr 06 and bought a Fazer which was a great bike

can't comment on the 650 but like yourself i'm 6ft 2" and the fazer was a bit short for me by comfy for commuting
book that CBT/DAS and get a bike, one of the best things I did

The SV is a good all round bike, very competent and ideal for commuting.
Pity i'm a sportsbike nutter or i'd have one...

cbr 600 fs.....still the best of the all round middleweight bunch, stop well, handle well, and go well...what more could you need..

plus they have bags of room and you will run out of steam on the sv long before you run out of it on the cbr, and it will take much longer to get bored of the cbr than the sv, that said the sv's are cracking little rev hungry bombers but id still have a 4 cylinder...

The indirect access test as is at the moment doesn't require you to take a seperate test for direct access, if you have the indirect access licence for 2 years it becomes the full power licence after that time, for the sake of a few extra months of restriction you do not have to take the new test(new test oct08)

Get your motorcycle theory test booked now and get revising, you'll have a few weeks wait for that.
Most of the motorcycle tests are intensive, cbt(1 day) then 3 days including test.

try getting insurance quotes for the bike you want, it may or may not change your mind.

eta, you should be able to do your cbt before your theory test, just make sure that they know you are intending to do the indirect access test when you go for the cbt as they should give you a geared bike rather than just a twist and go.

If you really want to do your test in the winter months I'd consider buying a good set of gloves before your cbt

Not so good for the commute, IMHO. My hands are sore every morning from having to rev the nuts of the thing!

Good comment about the gloves! I couldn't believe how cold my fingers got at first.

I bought a GS500ES after passing my DAS test. The bike was fine and did everything well enough. However, 2 months later I bought an SV1000 which I really like. It does sound much like Fazers, CBRs, SVs and Bandits all make good choices for all round first bikes (and beyond). Whatever you choose, good luck!

I bought an SV as my first big bike. They have their flaws (build quality being one) but they seemed to be a bike that I could grow with; at the time I was choosing between an ER6 and the SV. If you want more info on the SV try the forums at www.sv650.org.

The other bike I would suggest you could take a look at would be the Street Triple. However there is a bit of a waiting list for them hehe

Cheers for the help guys! Been out today trying leathers and everything on! Bit of a squeeze into some of them and one pair that was a tad to small causing me to fall over and struggle to get back up in the changing rooms but hey, all part of the fun! Can't stop grinning at every bike that goes by!

Just a bit of confusion with regards to my licence i have at the moment but as soon as thats done with the theory and cbt will be booked then the 3.5day course entitled "heaven" shall begin wooooooop!

I'll keep you posted.. If you want?

Ooo XTRAS's Xmas special on now... WATCH IT

My son who is 19 and a similar height to yourself has owned his SV 650 S for two years now and it has proved to be an excellent allrounder, superb economy averaging 60 mpg, good handling, brilliant torquey motor, good brakes and handling.
The only minor piccy point is the front end is a little soft, but that is easily resolved.

I have used the bike myself and have even toured a little with the wife riding pillion , to my great surprise she stated it was "most pleasant" , which trust me is high praise indeed.

The bike restricted didn't seem as affected by the 33 bhp limit as other machines I have ridden, in derestictd form it is deceptively fast , many times out pacing much larger and supposedly faster machinery.

Welcome from me GC.
SV650 has good reputation for easy to ride-almost do everything type of bike. Commonly a typical first bike after DAT I believe. perhaps for more thrills & maybe better handling try a Kawasaki ER6n (like mine hehe) I love mine as a great day to day bike capable of more if needed & a bit different to the SV. Sadly never seem to be many S/hand ones in MCN- maybe that popular ?!!

in restricted form the sv is a good choice because it Is torquey low down so they don't suffer too badly.

I bought it as a first bike and can't fault it. I want more power after two years, but if you're restricted thats not an issue anyway.

Cheers for all that guys! Really pleased at all the responses and help i've gained!

Thanks!

I'm just looking for one now! I don't want to spend too much on one (mainly because im poor and it'll probably get broken) so i'll be looking for an oldish one - but not to old! I think i just majorly contradicted myself? Nevermind eh!

Anyone know anywhere around Hertfordshire that sells second hand bikes? I've been to the odd place but no luck so far!

Thanks in advance!
