My 916 does around 40mpg, which is pretty good for a sportsbike.

I get about 60mpg from my CB500, and got 14 miles from reserve to empty on my ZX9R.. which was a bit embarrassing when it stopped

As an aside, what's the 'leglity' of these here in rule-festooned Britain? presumably it's classed as a motorcycle but are they even legal?

While touring in Ireland I got 158 miles before the fuel warning light went on. That's over 50 miles more than usual - think I could have done about 200 miles on the tankful which is pretty amazing for a thirsty v-twin. Never came close before or since.

Fiesty for a newbie Phaeton..? Give us an introduction to yourself.

I dont think its a "worry" for anyone with a bike here , I think 99% of us would agree our bikes are all mainly toys but the question is valid, especially if you want to cover some distance...40MPG seems to be around the universal average for a reasonably briskly ridden sports bike.

My old BMW K1 would regularly turn in well over 60mpg (about 65mpg being the best) on a run from Suffolk to Devon and back. These were at cruising speeds of around 85mph to 90mph so not hanging about. This gave a ‘real world’ tank range of around 275 miles between fill ups.

grow up & get a life prat. apart from the cost issue the fact i tour on my bikes means tank range is important. i toured NW Scotland over the summer & when the fuel stations are 40-60miles apart & you've got 100-120miles till reserve your basicly stopping at EVERY town just incase the next one doesnt have a fuel station.

I'm with the above, Last year went to france on the sp1 and was shitting myself cos i was running on fumes in the rush hour traffic going into paris, That is the last place i wanted to run out of petrol, mind you i only usually get about 85-90 miles before the light comes on maybe 100 miles if i'm on a steady run (not that often). dont know the mpg but i know its shit.

Well I'm not winning any WSB races but I'm not hanging about either, keeping it in the 'meat' of the powerband (6-9k rpm) and riding smoothly can result in rather 'brisk' progress with 40mpg (45 is possible on a M'way run) sure I can get the MPG down if I try but doesn't really make it much quicker on the road and I'm not after shaving 10ths of a second off my 'lap times'. You'd be surprised how 'economical' a 916 is (in fuel consumption only, mind). There are not many people passing me and on a rideout with friends on other large bikes (R1, ZXR750, TL1000R etc) I'm filling up roughly twice to their three times.

Just so we know how 'fast' you are what sort of MPG do you get from your 916?
