Hi All,

Not been riding for long, couple of months and bloody love it, just wished I started sooner being at the tender age of 35. We have a Honda CBR125R 07. I noticed completley by accident that I can change up without needing to use the clutch just by rolling off the throttle. Is this normal? Does it do any harm to the bike?

Got my DAS test booked for the end of the month, wish me luck

Cheers Matt.

No, That's how a quick shifter works, momentarily killing the power, so to take the load off the gearbox.

I always change up without using the clutch, just back off the throttle slightly. You get a smoother gear change. Been riding 20 years and have always changed up like this.

Thanks all. Really looking forward to getting a bike with a bit more get up and go. The 125 is fine for pottering about town and short trip to work but I'm finding the lack of power to be a bit dangerous at times and boring now.

As a complete novice to bikes since owning the CBR125 I really wanted to find out things I can and can't do, should and shouldn't do with the smaller bike, plus just find out how bikes behave and what our limits are in different circumstances hence seeing what happens when you change up without the clutch. Make the mistakes and learn from them on the 125 before getting something bigger is the plan.

Only thing bothering me a bit is knowing how much grip I have in the wet, something you can find out in a car quite easily but dont fancy that on 2 wheels. Determined to ride all year round though.

hey welcome to the party!
You'll learn about grip in no time if you ride all the time. I did my CBT in pouring rain going on sleet. Just dont jam on the throttle while you've got her leaned over.
Just ease on the gas when its raining, and allow more braking time (for you to think as much as anything else) and you'l be fine.
When you've done your test, take a 400 out for a spin. Its a great step up from a 125, still light and manageable, but prepares you for gutwrenching accelaration and gives you time to practise going 'whhhhhhhheeeeeeeee!'

I still do this all the time
