is there a 50cc bike out there which can be easily derestricted when a new young rider gets more confident? not a scooter type but more a sports or trail style. thank you.

The aprilia RS50, is one of the best 50s, don't think they're much trouble to derestrict & will do arouind 60mph once derestricted... though i think it's illegal to derestrict if the rider is 16.

It is illegal to de-restrict a moped no matter how old you are. The bike is a Moped, not a motorcycle. You can have a test so they become a motorcycle and you need things like a number plate light but if its classed as a motorcycle, you can't ride it when your 16. I've got my bike de-restricted though but don't assume its legal when your 17.

As trials bikes go

The Derbi Senda is easily the best there aren't many other good ones tbh

And sports bikes:

If you want a geared one:

Aprilia RS50: Best looking

Motorhispania RX50 (My bike :P)/ Rieju RS2/ Peugeot XR6: fastest bike derestricted without MOD's, also 9/10ths scale rather than 8/10ths most peds are.

Yamaha TZR: Good all rounder (highly reccomend this)

Derbi GPR/ Cagiva Prima: Slowest of the sports bikes, but generally slightly cheaper.

IF your looking for an automatic the Gilera DNA is good and can be found for cheap.

Hope that helps

I read it a few months back.

Edit: I've got a DNA and its a great little bike. Fast enough for round town and reliable enough.

Why spend a fortune on a moped, then spend a fortune de-restricting it (with the inevitable engine blow-up; this is a teenager remember!), only for the kid to turn 17 and want a car instead?
Have you thought what the insurance would be too?
16 year olds are heavy premiums anyway, worse still with a modified bike (50cc or otherwise).

Spend a couple of hundred on a chinese shonker (scooter or otherwise), then once the kid turns 17 pay for a three day course on a 125, get him through his test and get him on a decent sized bike.
Cheaper, easier and ultimately safer.

I think you've mis-understood

At 16 you can have a moped only once you have passed the cbt, this is limited in power and should have a restricted top speed of approx 31mph/50kmh. (It must have all lights, inc numberplate light and all other parts to pass an mot or be road legal regardless of wether its a moped or motorcycle - daytime mot's only exeption to lighting laws) Though if a moped is pre 1977 it can also have pedals

Removal of the restrictor would class the moped as a motorcycle and as such would be too powerful for a 16 year old by law. for a person with an appropriate licence/age this would not be a problem providing the modification was declared. If at 16 I had a moped on a cbt I could legally de-restrict it at 17, re register it as a 50cc motorcyle and insure it as such

At 17 or above you can have upto a restricted 125 on the cbt(unless test was passed pre feb 2001 for auto moped entitlement), or take a further moped test(11kw), limited access test (33bhp), if over 21 das can be taken

You missed the part about those "pedalled" pre August 1977 Mopeds being unrestricted. Any Moped registered Prior to August 1977 is Unrestricted and there is no requirement for them to be restricted. Hence the popularity of FS1E's.
