Has anyone ever heard of that?

I have at home, a 1974 Garelli Tiger Cross sports moped, which i am re-painting and re-chroming, as a cash job and the bike started, i selected first and it went backwards!

Kin eck!

I have heard of that before with some old 2 strokes.
I forget which bike used to be renowned for it , something like the Scott Squirrel or similar.

If when the engine fires it kicks back it can rotate backwards enough to fire again the wrong way

From then on it will keep going!

Bet that caoght you be supprise! hehe

Presumably, only a 2-stroke could do it!

yes because induction and exhaust timing are fixed and only the piston going up and down matters.

Can you imagin that happening on the grid to a 2 stroke racer?

Seen a bloke going into a section on a Greeves pre-65 trials bike. just as his front wheel entered the section between the sticks, it spluttered, backfired and lurched backwards, sending him over the handlebars. Think he felt a bit silly!

Not very common- they don't usually run backwards for more than one stroke.
